iOS 9 was only released roughly two and a half months ago, but according to statistics recently released by Apple, 70 percent of iOS devices are currently running the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system.
Statistics also reveal 22 percent of Apple’s mobile products are running iOS 8 and only eight percent are on iOS 7 or earlier. Combined stats indicate 92 percent of iOS users are running iOS 8 and iOS 9. This is likely the reason why most developers have dropped support for iOS 7. This allows developers to release simpler code and also release smaller sized updates.
iOS adoption has also increased over last year by a total of 10 percent. Similar statistics revealed at roughly the same time period last year indicated 60 percent of iOS users were running iOS 8. Two years ago adoption rates for iOS 7 amounted to 74 percent, a number slightly over iOS 9’s 70 percent.
Last year many people delayed upgrading to iOS 8 because of the operating system’s relatively large install size. This is a problem Apple’s new “App Thinning” technology hopes to solve. However, many take issue with the fact that Apple continues to offer 16GB as the iPhone’s base storage option despite the relatively low cost of increasing this capacity.
Apple’s recently released statistics are in stark contrast to Google’s Android operating system. Only 26 percent of users are using Android 5.0 Lollipop as of November 2nd, 2015. When it comes to Android 6.0 Marshmallow adoption rates are even lower, amounting to just 0.3 percent of Android devices.
The rollout of Android operating system updates take considerably longer because of the OS’ disparate manufacturers. Even though it’s been a few months since release, only a handful of Android devices currently support 6.0 Marshmallow.
