Google’s Nexus Protect insurance program now available in Canada

When Google announced the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P in September, it also unveiled a new add-on called Nexus Protect that covers buyers from accidental damage. While originally available to customers in the United States, Google has officially launched the service in Canada.

All Nexus smartphones come with a one-year manufacturer warranty, but Nexus Protect extends the warranty to include an additional year of mechanical breakdown, and two years of accidental damage. The fine print states that Google will cover accidents such as drops, spills and cracked screens, and will cover all device malfunctions “that occur through no fault of the owner.” Each service claim includes a $99 service fee, known as a deductible in insurance speak, and users are limited to two accidental damage claims over two years.

Once a claim if filed through its dedicated mynexusprotect.com portal, Google says it ship you a replacement as early as the next business day once the claim is approved. The program costs $99 CAD for the Nexus 5X and $129 CAD for the Nexus 6P.

Nexus Protect is similar to Apple’s AppleCare+ and HTC’s Uh Oh Protection plan.
