Facebook now warn users if their account is being snooped upon by state-sponsored hackers

With each subsequent Snowden document revealing the drastic lengths governments around the world have gone to spy on their own citizens, companies like Facebook have come under increased pressure to keep user’s data safe.

Starting today, if Facebook believes your account has been compromised by a state-sponosed hacker, the company will issue a banner notification (seen below), informing you it’s probably time to change your password.

In a blog post discussing the addition, Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos, outlines the company’s reason for adding the notification.

“While we have always taken steps to secure accounts that we believe to have been compromised, we decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion that an attack could be government-sponsored,” says Stamos.

“We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts.”

Stamos goes on to note that receiving the above notification doesn’t mean Facebook has been compromised as a whole.
