Quebec residents have been banned from using their mobile devices while driving since April 2008. If caught, the fine for texting, emailing, talking or basically looking at a phone ranges from $115 to $145, with an additional penalty of four demerit points.
A new set of videos released by the Chaîne officielle de la Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) aims to bring additional awareness of the risks associated with distracted driving. In creating these ads, it’s clear SAAQ wanted to shock viewers to get its point across. “I know I shouldn’t do this, but I can’t stop myself from texting,” says an actor in one of the videos, before the video cuts to its next scene with a little girl laying on the road.
Robert Poëti, the province’s minister of transportation, recently stated that over 66,000 tickets related to distracted driving were handed out in 2014.
