It’s been less than 24 hours since Apple posted its Move to iOS app on the Google Play Store — its first Android app, to boot — but avid fans of Google’s ecosystem have uploaded over 4,000 reviews, amounting to a fairly generous two-star rating.
While many of the written reviews poke fun at Apple’s closed ecosystem — “I attempted to switch to ios (apparently zombies ate my brain) and my iPhone 3G would not accept my data. Also, my micro USB would not fit” — but some are much darker and more serious, amounting to a full-on culture war within an app’s rating area.
One review went so far as to compare Apple to North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un. “If Apple was a country it would be North Korea. Looks like Apple wants to attack our freedom and control everything we do on our phone and also charge us a bomb for it in this process.”
Another review said that Apple would be the next BlackBerry. “I’d rather be shot in the face Then (sic) switch to a closed, controlled environment. Apple will be the next BlackBerry in a few years. If you use this app, then you deserve to pay more and get less. Apple would never allow this on their communist environment.. Google is too accomodating (sic) to isheep.”
A few reviews sought to be both funny and serious at the same time. This one quotes a popular Taylor Swift song. “No Thanks. Never owning an Apple product ever again. Nice try with the random copied features from the Android OS and calling them REVOLUTIONARY. We are never ever ever, getting back together!”
That Apple’s first Android app quickly turned into a flame war between smartphone cultures is no surprise — we see enough localized examples of it on our own site — but it speaks to the company’s truly singular motivation in its belief that iOS, and the iPhone, is better for most people than Android. Clearly millions disagree, but the mandate is having at least some success: CEO Tim Cook said during the company’s last earnings call that more people are switching from Android to iPhone than ever.
