Old Google+ Photos shutting down August 1st

Back at Google I/O, the company did what many thought right: it separated its excellent photos product from the Google+ social network, which was increasingly alienated from the core photo storage experience.

Today, Google announced that as of August 1st it is shuttering Google+ Photos in favour of the new standalone product. Google+ Photos will cease working first on Android, followed by iOS and the web shortly thereafter.

Users who haven’t downloaded or navigated to the new Google Photos will soon be gently prodded to do so, a process that will become more forceful as the shutdown nears.

Google Photos is very similar to the old Google+ version, but featured unlimited high-quality backups and more comprehensive editing features, as well as a revamped Assistant for automatically creating movies and other entertaining pieces of art from one’s photos.
