In May 2014, Netflix released its first speed rankings of Canadian internet providers, showing Bell’s Fibe service was the clear leader, with competitors Rogers, Shaw, Eastlink, Cogeco and others trailing behind. Then in January 2015, the Canadian rankings showed “much movement” in the middle of the list, with SaskTel, Rogers and some others making great strides.
Today, Netflix has returned with its mid-2015 list. The streaming service puts Bell Fibe once again on top with an average download speed of 3.69 Mbps, followed by MTS’s own fiber solution following close behind. Cable-based Shaw and Videotron follow, while Rogers continues to climb, claiming sixth position, up two spots from May, with an average speed of 3.41 Mbps. Telus also rose one spot to 10th with an average of 3.27 Mbps.
Netflix points out that “The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network. Faster Netflix performance generally means better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions.”
There are over 3.5 million Canadians with a Netflix subscription and it should be noted that Canadian speeds are faster than those in the United States. Nextflix’s U.S. ISP Speed Index shows Cox in first place with an average speed of 3.58 Mbps.
