Another report says the next Nexus smartphone will come from Huawei

Nexus 6

The next Nexus device will come courtesy of Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei, according to a new report from The Information.

This is not the first time the company has been pegged as Google’s next Nexus partner. In May, a report from Android Police said that—along with LG—Huawei would produce one of two Nexus devices. This latest report helps add creditability to that earlier one, but does little to provide additional details on the device itself. The consensus is still that the Huawei-made Nexus model will feature a 5.7-inch screen, a Snapdragon 810 processor and a 3,500mAh battery. Beyond that, however, the only other detail we know about the device is that it is apparently codenamed “Bullhead.”

What this latest report does do is provide some interesting insights into the close relationship Google and Huawei are developing.

The Information says Huawei’s Nexus device will likely mark the first Android device where Chinese users will be able to access the Play Store. Currently, the country’s developers are allowed to upload and sell apps on the app marketplace, but many of Google’s own apps and services are blocked in the country. It’s not clear what role Huawei will play in this reversal beyond releasing the phone itself.

In return, the Mountain View-based company will help Huawei market its upcoming smartwatch in North America, as well as any other devices it might release here in the future.

Back to the phone itself, based on Google’s track record with releasing these devices, we’ll likely see a release sometime this October or November.
