Microsoft acquires Surface 3 pen tech from N-trig

N-trig Pen

On its official blog, Microsoft announced that it has acquired the technology behind the Surface Pen.

The patents for the pen, as well as several assets the from the company that produced the pen, N-trig, a firm Microsoft was rumoured to have bought in February for a reported $200 million, were purchased by Microsoft for $30 million, says The Wall Street Journal. Additionally, employees from N-trig will join Microsoft Israel.

“We can’t wait to show you what we’ll deliver for our Surface Fans in the future. Digital pens have a ways to go to be as good as pen and paper on some dimensions, and we’ll get there,” says the company on its blog. “But more importantly, adding the ability to capture and share the work you do with a digital pen opens up possibilities that traditional pen and paper just can’t match. This investment is another step that will let us push that innovation forward.”

Prior to the Surface 3 and Surface 3 Pro, the previous iterations of the Surface tablet were outfitted with Wacom supplied pens.
