Ontario increased the fine for those caught using their wireless device while driving last year, now at $280 per infraction. Alberta seems to be heading in the same direction as its justice minister said it’s “simply time.” The current fine is set at $172, but if the proposed bill amendments to Bill 204 would see an increase by $33 to $250 and include three demerit points.
Jonathan Denis said, “I’m definitely of the opinion now that it’s time to look at demerits in distracted driving. I’ve talked to the local police agencies and this is definitely something that they want to pursue.”
Alberta’s distracted driving law went into effect September 1st, 2011.
