Swarm introduces messaging for iOS and Android users

Swarm app by Foursquare

Foursquare last year announced plans to split the company into two distinct services, Swarm and Foursquare. The former maintains some of the features that die-hard Foursquare users had come to love, like check-ins and location sharing, but does away with the oh-so-popular badges and mayorship reward system.

Foursquare is committed to expanding the app’s functionality though. The company announced an update this week that will see Swarm users gain the ability to message other people from within the application. Foursquare said in a blog post that users had been asking for a way to reach out to friends and groups as well as “more of the fun and personality of the older versions of Foursquare.”

This update for iOS and Android users will allow users to send a message to a friend, a group of friends, or all of their friends (even the ones without Swarm). Basically, instead of just checking in and seeing which of your friends are close by, you’ll be able to ask them directly if they want to hang out. Swarm’s messaging feature will even show you where your friends are on the map so you can see just how close they are.

No word on when this will be available for Windows Phone users, though Swarm took longer to arrive on Microsoft’s mobile OS so a delay in the rollout of this new feature isn’t all that surprising.
