John Chen, BlackBerry’s CEO, stated at Mobile World Congress that the company is not ruling out plans to release another tablet. The BlackBerry PlayBook was not the success it dreamed of, but Chen noted, “It’s not in the works, but it’s on my mind… I want it to be different. I want it to be iconic. Bringing a tablet out for a tablet’s sake, it’s not the right thing to do.”
However, Secusmart, an encryption company that BlackBerry acquired last year, has decided to partner with Samsung and IBM to launch a tablet called “SecuTABLET.” This is not the PlayBook 2, but a customized Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 loaded with IBM software, Samsung’s Knox, and backed with SecuSmart security.
The SecuTABLET is being called “the Secure Tablet for Public Sector and Enterprises.” While this is designed for enterprise users who desire maximum security, Secusmart notes that “personal applications or those that are not additionally secured, such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and WhatsApp, can also be used.”
The cost for this level of security is not cheap. While the consumer version of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is around $500, the SecuTABLET tablet will ring in around $2,500 CDN (US$2,380).
