Samsung Gear VR may be delaying Galaxy Note 4’s Lollipop roll-out

Three months on from Lollipop’s release, many users of current generation flagship devices are still waiting for the update. Most OEMs are keeping their release schedules pretty vague, which doesn’t help. Today brings something of an explanation for Galaxy Note 4 users, though.

Faryaab Sheikh, editor-in-chief of popular Samsung blog SamMobile says that the reason for the delay in the Lollipop deployment for Note 4 users is the Gear VR. Specifically, the folks at Oculus are tweaking the kernel to ensure compatibility with Samsung’s virtual reality headset.

The Gear VR is currently only available for purchase in the United States but Sheikh goes on to say that that this update is necessary before the Gear VR can launch elsewhere.

The Gear VR was announced alongside the Note 4 last September, at IFA Berlin. Similar to Google Cardboard, all of the processing power is done by the attached smartphone as opposed to the headset itself.
