BlackBerry wants iPhone users to ‘work wide’ with new trade-in program

BlackBerry is getting into the holiday spirit, and poking fun at Apple in the process, with a new trade-in program designed to get skeptics using the Passport.

Announced today, the BlackBerry Passport Trade-up Program allows iPhone users to get up to $400 CAD for their devices, plus $200 towards a new Passport. The trade-up program runs from December 1st to February 13th and works for iPhone 4s, 5, 5s, 5c and 6 users.

Unfortunately, when you dig into the deal, the fire peters out: the $400 trade-in value is for the iPhone 6, which can be sold for far more than that on the second-hand market. Other trade-in values include $100 for the iPhone 4s, $135 for the iPhone 5, $110 for the iPhone 5c, and $240 for the iPhone 5s. All devices must meet Clover Wireless’s — the company facilitating the trade-in program — standards for “good working order,” too.

The $200 will also be delivered as a pre-paid Visa gift card, and will only be issued if the Passport is purchased from Amazon or ShopBlackBerry, so the deal doesn’t apply if the device is purchased on contract through a carrier.

Those looking for a more traditional route to buying a Passport can save $100 CAD from the price of an unlocked Passport. The deal began last week and will continue “for a limited time,” bringing the cost of the Passport to $599 CAD. The BlackBerry Z30 is also available for $249 CAD during the same period as well.

With the Classic coming in just a few weeks, BlackBerry fans have a lot to be excited about.
