Google publishes Apple to Android switch guide for smartphone users

Android lollipop

A few weeks ago, Apple published a helpful guide for Android users switching from Google’s mobile operating system to iOS. Though the guide was little more than a collection of helpful links to the appropriate Apple support pages, it shows just how confident Apple is that its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be able to win the hearts of Android lovers.

Fast forward to this week, and Google is returning the favour. The company just launched the Nexus 6 last week and is now offering iTunes users a little helping hand with the switch from Apple’s walled garden to open source Android.

The guide sits at the URL www.android.com/switch and covers photos, contacts, email and apps. It also explains how users can transfer up to 20,000 songs from iTunes to Google Play for free.

After music, apps are probably what users worry about most when they consider switching platforms. Luckily, Android has most of the same apps the App Store has. Google doesn’t have a magic button that will download all of your old apps (unless you happen to be switching from Android to Android, but there are better ways for that now, too), so it instead opts for calming reassurances that the Play Store has 1.3 million applications in its library and you can just as easily sign into Netflix on Android.

These guides don’t amount to much if you know what you’re doing, but they do feature a lot of often-Googled information for those that are interested in switching but are afraid to pull the trigger because they’ve been with one platform for so long. They’re pretty self-serving, but they do show that switching isn’t all that hard, which is great for the consumer.
