Square uses customer data to analyze how Canadians and Americans order food

Square has been helping small businesses across North America process payments for several years now, but the company has also been collecting some interesting information along the way. Square has been posting visualizations of that data on its Town Square blog over the last month or so and the latest edition includes a look at how Canadians customize their food orders, and how they differ from Americans in that regard.

For example, thanks to Square, we now know that Canadians prefer to sit in than take out; Square’s data shows Canadians are 421% more likely to order food ‘for here’ than ‘to go.’ We’re also 114% more likely to add ketchup to our order compared to mayo, and choose chocolate over vanilla most of the time.

When it comes to Americans versus Canadians, it seems the people of the Great White North prefer Pepsi while Americans prefer Coke. We also prefer our meat (chicken, not pork) spicy over mild and with mozzarella over cheddar.

The information comes from Square Register, Square’s point-of-sale software, which launched in Canada alongside Square Reader in 2012. Earlier this month, Square announced the addition of inventory management software Stitch, as well as accounting software QuickBooks and Xero to Square Register. Now business can not only monitor how customers are modifying their orders but also keep track of which items are really selling.
