Google has updated its Google+ app for Android with a wealth of new photo editing features. Though the company’s social network may not have the user engagement of Twitter, or the sheer volume of Facebook, it’s carving a nice niche for itself with photos, and who are we to complain about another great Android app in which to edit our pictures?
Integrating more seamlessly with Snapseed, the photo editing suite Google got with its Nik Software acquisition in 2012, Google+ for Android now supports non-destructive photo editing, so if you upload a photo on a phone and edit it on a laptop, both the original and edited versions will be available in both places. The user interface has also been tweaked, with larger, flatter icons that show off the range of new filters and other editing tools added to the app.
Furthering Google’s plans to backup every photo ever, Google+ for Android now supports local folder backup — all folders, from screenshots to Instagram to VSCO Cam — in addition to automatic photo uploads. For those, like me, who take a lot of screenshots, this may actually be a detriment, but it will certainly ensure one’s memories are stored in one place.
The app has also been cleaned up, with a unified “All” list of photos, incorporated local and cloud-stored content. It’s a bit messy, and could use some filtering options, but it’s a lot less confusing than before.
