How to donate to the Typhoon Haiyan relief fund from your mobile phone

Sometimes, acts of nature disrupt our lives in ways that even technological advances cannot prevent or repair. During such trying hours and days, it’s important to focus on what’s really important: the people that are affected by these disasters.

With over 10,000 people feared dead and over 9 million affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, one of the strongest storms ever recorded, it’s important to donate what you can as quickly as you can. The Canadian government has announced it will match donations, dollar for dollar, from individuals and businesses, to accredited Canadian charities, including the Red Cross.

This morning, BellRogers and TELUS have announced donations of $100,000, $50,000 and $100,000 respectively to help the victims of the storm, and it’s easy to do the same from your smartphone. Rogers, TELUS and Bell users can easily donate $5 to the Red Cross by texting REDCROSS or ROUGE to 30333. You can also donate directly to the Red Cross from their website in higher denominations.

TELUS is also providing free home phone calls (landline, not mobile) to the Philippines to BC and Alberta residents until November 14th. The company has also confirmed that half of its $100,000 donation will go to the Red Cross, while the other half will go to the”TELUS International Philippines Community Board for projects to support the relief effort directly in the Philippines.”

Today is Remembrance Day, after all.
