Welcome to a new MobileSyrup

mobilesyrupnew

MobileSyrup has seen a few site redesigns since late 2007. Our newest version is fresher, cleaner, and probably most important, it’s responsive! No matter what device you’re using – desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone – the site will be very friendly to you.

We’ve been taking notes over the past couple years of what you wanted to see. One of the main items was a site that was mobile friendly. This was a given considering the topic we’re writing about, but I was hesitant to produce a mobile app for each platform and didn’t want to be bogged down with continually updating them. We’ve attempted several mobile versions, but most lacked the features that gave a great experience. The new version of MobileSyrup will adapt to your screen size. It’s best viewed on displays that are 1024, 768 and 320.

The font is larger and easier to read. Story titles are also large and in charge. I believe having the titles above the fold make for a better reading experience. There’s also several ways to share articles that you want others to read – the social icons for Twitter, Facebook and Google+ are all embedded within the posts and comments. In addition, within each article you can now easily switch between the previous or next article (this is located above and below the article you’re currently viewing). We’ve also included a “Trending News” section on the right hand side of the site – this gives a good outline of what hot topics people are talking about.

Reviews. Our reviews are one of the main reasons people visit the site. Each review will now big pictures and big picture galleries, plus a glorious looking scorecard. We’ve broken down each review with a strict guideline to include the following topics: Design, Software, Display, Performance, Build Quality, Camera Quality and Battery Life. Each of them will have individual scoring, then we’ll produce an overall score to represent the device (smartphone, tablet, accessory) as a whole. Take a look at the homepage and you’ll see the ‘latest reviews’ section, hover over a review and it’ll reveal the score, then upon clicking you’ll have the full hands-on review.

Search has been improved, finally. The top nav bar makes it easier to find the content you’re looking for. Broken down by News, Reviews, Featured and Contests categories makes for a simple way to get quick access to specific topics. Another route is to simply type in the term you’re looking for within the search icon on the right hand side. However, the highlight of search is that we’ve now included an option to drill down deeper by searching by platform, manufacturer or carrier by clicking on the ‘Filter Articles’ button.

This is just the beginning for this version of MobileSyrup. Over the next couple weeks we’ll introduce a new Forum, polls and a comparison section of devices. Please poke around the site and let us know what you think! Also, please give us feedback on what you’d like to see.

  • Louis Quintal

    Awesome! Great job guys!

    • Plazmic Flame

Mobile site looks like iOS 7 or something, lol

    • chris

Maybe, but iOS wasn’t the first one with this design idea, by far. Reminds me personally of the Verge.

  • Josh

love it. the site looks freaking great plus it finally works properly on my Samsung Ativ S… I went to the site on my smartphone and thought I was at the wrong site for a minute. You guys freaking rock for doing this!

  • S2556

Awesome job, great new layout. Love that scoring is back and even better, how well it is implemented by hovering over the thumbnails. Very clean look.

  • wildspin

The desktop version looks very nice but the mobile version need a fix … keep up the good work, folks!

  • daksen

This is really nice :). Good job guys!

  • EvanKrosney

Love everything! Nice job Ian, Daniel, and anyone else with Mobilesyrup! The design is fresh and modern, and it’s great to finally have a site that’s mobile friendly and responsive, intuitive and easy to navigate across all my devices. The new topbar with the latest stories and reviews on the homepage is great, and it’ll be nice to finally have the forum back in a few weeks.

Finally, thank you SO much for bringing back scored reviews! It’s nice to be able to have a set, concrete numerical score along with a nice breakdown of scores across each category.

Thanks for all the improvements over the years, and it’s great to see you guys growing and becoming even better with each update!

  • Ferraro161

    It’s beautiful. Looks so crisp

  • Alpine

i really like the fonts…really nice job guys..would mind telling the font name for the Title of the articles ?

  • tilbar

LOOKING NICE! It’s fresh…and definitely more responsive.

Two comments: It might be a bit too spacious, the top feature slider fills my whole screen and the images (within the articles) are a bit big. The article previews are also a bit long, I have to do mega scrolling just to scan through the recent articles.

But overall, this is fantastic! Thanks so much! Love the review hover effect…

  • Super_Deluxe

It’s great, very responsive, beautiful design. Best refresh thus far. One thing though, it would be better if you placed the ads at the very top and above everything or maybe below the article itself just so readers don’t get distracted and/or irritated easily. Other than that it’s a great job!

    • mobilesyrup

Yep – that’s an error that we’re fixing.
      Ian

  • Humberto Giambrone

    I am aroused.

  • Rich

Overall, enjoying the new look — great job.
However, I’m a little annoyed that I have to scroll down to see the latest news. I preferred simply loading the page and having the first article in plain sight.

    • mobilesyrup

So, possibly something like a ‘hide’ button for all the reviews and features articles?

      Ian

    • qu3becker

I though that removing some padding would make the fact that the news are below two rows of stuff less annoying. Having some kind of button that can reduce the size and hide the reviews and featured articles would be nice too.

  • JustToClarify

    Fantastic!

  • Ry29

Looks great on mobile. A welcome change!

  • Ben S

I like the clarity and readability of the changes.
I hope similar attention will be paid to the grammar, spelling, punctuation and writing style with this new direction.
You guys do a good job, and I think paying attention to these details would improve your work immensely.

    • Daniel Bader

      Don’t be ridiculous.

    • Ben S

‘scuse me? paying attention to writing style, grammar, spelling and punctuation is ridiculous? or is making it a personal attack (calling me ridiculous) a child’s way to deal with valid criticism? (this last bit was rhetorical BTW).
This is unfortunate, I like what you guys have done with the site, it looks more and more professional. Too bad that professionalism doesn’t extend to the site mods.
      Seeya MS.

    • Daniel Bader

Oh, dear. In the interest of not losing a valued reader, I’ll take the step I thought I didn’t need to of explaining that of course we will pay attention to grammar and spelling (as we do currently), and that what I wrote was a joke.

I’m sorry, Ben, if I offended you. I was just trying to make light of something we are fully aware of. It’s a small crew here, as you know, and occasionally spelling mistakes get away from us.

      Hope to keep you around.

  • mylivespot

    Looks great!

However the ‘read more’ button doesn’t work on the mobile version of the site. You have to click the article title.

  • Jason Elliott

It is a much better mobile experience. The UI is cleaner on my Nexus 4, faster load rate and spaced out more for better reading. I like the new comment pop up on the nav bar or keyboard. Non intrusive but seen by the reader.

  • rgl168

Looks good, especially on mobile devices.

  • Jason Leask

    looks good

  • Brigitte Laskowski

Finally, I don’t have to zoom in and out to read.

  • TG

I wish the menu items were persistent (i.e. they stayed on screen even as we scrolled down)

    • mobilesyrup

      looking into this.

      Ian

    • spammenotdisqus

Please don’t do this… websites that do that are always slow and less responsive. I always switch to the desktop version if I’m subjected to that, or worst case an RSS reader. Personally can’t stand it

  • Devin

Sweet! Love the new design. Loads a lot quicker too!

  • bluecanada

Has kind of an iOS 7 feel to it, the new look…

    • southerndinner

It doesn’t look like a multi-colored abortion so no, it definitely doesn’t

    • bluecanada

Thinner font than before, white background, lots of space…

  • HiKsFiles

A very welcomed refresher indeed. Looks awesome. As someone noticed however, it takes too much scrolling on my S3 just to get to the first articles. Visiting MobileSyrup a few times a day, I’m not that interested in having to scroll through all the reviews before seeing the latest news. +1 for a hide button or something like that. Thumbs up, great job! :)

  • Thomas C. Riddell

Looks very clean for Canadian Mobile Phone and Electronics this is the place top go

  • Dalex

The new look is awesome and the responsiveness is there on all my devices. You guys continue the go to reference for Canadian mobile technology news. Keep it up!

  • hoo dat

Liking it a lot, especially mobile, much clearer and sharper. Thanks for these up grades!

  • o_zzy

    Bravo!

  • Balls O’Steele

    Mobile version:
Too much white space. Compress the content.
Breaking news is no longer breaking after 3 hours.
I want to see news item summaries right at the top in chronological order, not ads, not old reviews.
Number of comments not appearing on summaries.

    • TomsDisqusted

“Breaking news is no longer breaking after 3 hours.”

I think that’s a harmful perspective – it is what pushes the media to rush stories out before anything useful is known.

If a reader checks the site once a day, e.g. after work, then maybe breaking news should be 24 hours.

    • Peter

24 hours of breaking news is called a newspaper.

  • Kenny G

Looks awesome guys. You were due for a refresh.

  • thedosbox

Very slick – and thank you for implementing social widgets that don’t break the browser back button.

  • qu3becker

Nice redesign, I’m all for clean and lean design.
But it would be nice having a reverse color scheme button to read at night without being blinded by the whiteness and the padding is a little excessive.

    • somedoobsandbeer

If you’re viewing on android there’s already plenty of options from browsers to system tweaks to accomplish this across the board, not just for this site. If your on iOS, enable reverse colors and perhaps bind it to triple tap of the home button. Also, works great across the board and not just for this site. If your on bb, well you can always buy another device, lol.

  • Zee

Love the new look, very slick.

  • Peter

    looks beautiful… wow

  • Terry Cameron

Nice work on the website. Your Google +1 button is screwed up. Looks like you’re trying to use the old button (yuck) and it’s redrawing it as the new one once I mouseover.

  • JK

Love the new look, great job!

  • Paris1957

I normally hate when a site I’m accustomed to changes their visual format but I have to say I absolutely LOVE the new look. Nice job!

  • Maxime Godin

Really nice job! My only advice so far would be to maybe bold up the main text font a little. It’s really thin, and can get a bit straining to read on long articles. Otherwise, really, really nice job!

  • Brent Bisaillion

nicely done guys! I’m not so embarrassed to crawl your site now.

  • Martini

    Digging it here, too!

  • gezaim

Clean and modern. I like it!

  • trickster_qc

    bad choice of font! really!

  • Kevin Dunphy

Possibly the nicest design of any tech site!

  • alphs22

    Great start, good design language.

I think the spacing and element sizes can be improved though (they are too large). Takes too much scrolling to navigate through the site.

  • southerndinner

    Looks fantastic

  • canuck07

Good job! Now fix your mobile version because it’s a pain to read the desktop version on a small screen.

  • ShadowFist23

Not bad! One little things I noticed though; favicon is missing on article pages

    • mobilesyrup

Will be put back, I noticed that as well.

      Ian

  • RogersSarahM

Congrats to both of you! The new site looks great!

  • percyglanville

    Congrats…. looks great, works great

  • Jonathan G.

I love the new layout, I was a little shocked when I saw it last night but I have gotten used to it very quickly.

  • David

Maybe it is just me, but I hate the trend to this kind of design which is popping up everywhere. When I visit a news type website such as this, my priority is to see what is new since my last visit. With the newest items were easily visible above the fold but now I have to scroll down a bunch just to see if there is anything new. This is not as bad as some other sites but certainly not as clean and easy as the previous version.

  • Erik N.

You guys did an amazing job, very clean, lots of white space, interactive and amazing on mobile devices. Keep up the great work, I’m sure everyone agrees you guys killed it

  • Cmarenburg

    Looks awesome! Keep it up.

  • A. Avanzado

I love this new look, very clean! :)

  • Chris Zhu

    Loving it!!!

  • Bryan

Looks great guys. One suggestion. On the home page, the photos above the headline of each story can appear slightly confusing. Perhaps you could move them so the headline appears first, then the photo (similar to how it looks when you click through).

    • mobilesyrup

Yep – we’re changing the photos to be below the main title. Agree, looks odd.

      Ian

  • Mr.CoolBerry

    Wow! The new
    MobileSyrup
    really Sexy!

  • Vineet Sharma

Great Going MobileSyrup!! How about an app for smart phones? That would be nice for frequent users like me.

  • Parsa Bahrami

    Looks great :)

  • harpoonGill

    really nice!

I had to turn Flash on the site (desktop) to comment though, would love to see that in HTML 5.

And my one request I wish you guys would do is have people opt-in to enter contests instead of just picking from the tonnes of followers you guys have. Let people who truly want the thing say they wanna enter the contests!

  • KoalaMeatPie

Love love LOVE the new font!

  • Garrett Cooper

Guess I’m the only one who preferred the old layout.

    • Peter

You’re not the only one. I’m with you.

  • Anish Patel

It’s awesome….but it would be better if you put the headlines on top of the picture rather than below the picture on the home page. Also the photo size should be abit small it takes a lot of space even on laptop. Overall the new lay out is good.

  • ArberBeq

it looks good but everytime I visit mobilesyrup I feel like I went to the rogers website by accident

    • mobilesyrup

Really? Hmmm. That has to change then :)

      Ian

  • Michael Techs

I like it, but there’s too much in the main page, I liked the old one where it showed only the news in smaller articles.
It’s also very very bright on my screen now.
    My eyes hurt.
Edit: It seems the white threw me off about the mess amount of info in the main page, however like I said, bright like the sun just got a glossy finish.

    • mobilesyrup

Will look into what we can do to make it softer on the eyes.

      Ian

  • Rob

Opened up MobileSyrup on my browser today and I was like WTF. Still could not believe the change really diggin it guys great job!

  • Aaron DM

Hey just a suggestion: for the front page, put the images below the article headline. Seems really odd to see the picture while scrolling and then see the title.

Other than that, the new layout is great and I like the font used as well, very clean.

    • Peter

I absolutely agree. Having been in marketing all my life, and that’s a lot of years, having the title BELOW the image is simply, well, stupid.

You scroll down, see a picture, and then wonder what the picture is all about, so you scroll further down to finally get an idea why that picture was chosen. Then, if the picture is obscure, you have to scroll back up to have another look to see how the title relates to the picture, and then you have to scroll down again to read the article.

Very poor image placement, otherwise, the site looks nice. It will take some time getting used to it, though.

    • mobilesyrup

Yep, Agreed. We’re changing the photos to be below the main title.

      Ian

    • Peter

      Fantastic!

  • sting

Always enjoy your site, the improvements look great! Thanks

  • Mr. Everything

Sighs. How about a black background and light grey text? Why does every site have to be glaring white?

  • Eduardo

Great job! Both the full and mobile version are much much better, quicker, cleaner… Just great. The comparison section will be a great addition and thanks for adding scores to the reviews!

  • Jimmy Peña

Im from Venezuela. I always read this site. I know all the news here are for Canadians, but this site is awesome.

  • PT

I like it! keep it this way, don’t monkey around.

  • Steve Wight

    Looks fantastic!

  • dc07

    Looks great!!!

  • DaveySmash

Finally! I always found it odd that a site like this didn’t have a mobile version of the site.

Fantastic job! I really like the changes.

  • Pat Daigle

Very nice, keep up the good work!

  • Patrick Cuyegkeng

A+. Clean and modern looking. Very nice! The large amount of white is a bit glaring at times. Could use a little refinement in that regard, but otherwise a very nice step forward!

  • Ryan

Looks great on my Nexus 7 and Lumia 520! Thought I went to the wrong site at first.

  • Jason

    Awesome!

  • Threecube

Can you please make a crappy looking site and provide crappy reviews so I am not tempted to upgrade my cell phone every 6 months and don’t get jealous of people who win your giveaways? Thank you.

  • Nadefrenzy

Wow this is horrid on my note 2…can’t reply to anything…please fix this

  • RobertG

Great new format…Well done guys and guyettes
