To many web surfers, visiting Tumblr is as second nature as Facebook or Twitter; it’s often the first place people will go to discover the latest memes, fashion tips, recipes and more. Its picture-first simplicity has spawned millions of blogs and billions of pageviews and it is growing every day
But despite capable mobile apps, Tumblr is still very much a web-based portal. The metrics point to a sea change in how its users are accessing the site, but the movement has been glacial. Today’s update, which introduces a new camera interface and the network’s popular Photosets feature to the iOS app, should further push mobile adoption.
The company also took a cue from Instagram and allows users to double-tap on an entry to like it, and you can now change your avatar with one tap.
The previous version also introduced iPad support to the app, so the experience on iOS is pretty powerful. Tumblr did bring tablet support to the Android app recently, too, but it’s not very good. In fact, the Android app needs a lot of love, so here’s hoping the company turns its attention to Google’s platform in the coming months.
