Swackett, the quirky weather app, finally arrives on Android

One of the best weather apps on iOS and OS X has finally made its way to Android. Swackett takes a fresh approach to weather, as it outfits “peeps”, or representations of people, in clothes appropriate for the conditions outside. This means that if it’s frigid (like it is today in Toronto) your peeps will likely be wearing a thick jacket and long underoos. Special edition peeps, such as the Captain Jack Sparrow outfit you see above, are pushed to the app on a regular basis.

The app also contains conventional weather information such as hourly forecasts, radar imagery, severe weather alerts and more. The layout isn’t very intuitive — the bottom bar contains hidden menus that alight when you tap on the screen — but by and large it’s an attractive app. The one thing missing is the option to remove the permanent ad at the top of the screen. iOS offers this via a 99c in-app purchase and it should be available for Android users, too. There’s also no widget, nor any notification bar alerts, but we’re holding out hope for their future additions.

Swackett is a cute diversion from the regular assortment of too-serious weather apps. It could use some improvement, but it’s nice to finally have it on Android.
