Rogers survey reveals that 34% of Canadians would give up Alcohol to use the Internet

A new survey has been released by Rogers this morning that takes a look at how Canadians are “hungry for the next generation of Internet experiences”… otherwise known as how connected we are to the internet, and how we are or will use the internet in the future. The survey was completed by Rogers and Vision Critical and is part of their ongoing “Rogers Innovation Report.” In total there was 1,010 random people who took the survey (between April 13th to April 15th 2012) and found the following:

- 79% say that the Internet allows them to connect in ways that make their lives better now
- 72% expect the Internet to play an increasingly important role in the next five years
- 98% use the Internet to connect with family and friends
- 97% use the Internet to follow the news
- 94% use the Internet to do personal banking and manage their finances
- 93% use the Internet to research health issues and symptoms
- 92% use the Internet to watch movies and television
- 34% would give up alcohol to use the Internet
- 31% would go without chocolate to use the Internet
- 27% would skip coffee to use the Internet
- 6% would give up regular sex to use the Internet
- 4% would go without daily bathing to use the Internet
- 4% would choose the Internet over personal contact with others

As to the future and what people want, specifically Machine-to-Machine (M2M), the Rogers survey revealed that 37% said they would consider using “smart” appliances to help them manage their house. One interesting point of the survey showed some slight interest in people getting information downloaded directly to their brain. The press release noted that “Many of those surveyed have creative ways for how future Internet experiences may make their lives easier and better. Ideas included downloading information directly into the brain, automating road traffic to eliminate the need for human drivers and virtual reality phone calls that would assimilate personal contact.”

The Canadian population is just over 34 million, so even if this specific survey was 1,000+ the bottom line is that we are deeply connected, possibly addicted, to the Internet for everyday needs at anytime of the day. Here’s an infographic that shows all the details:

People would actually give up sex? What happens when the power goes out in the evening and there is no access to the Internet via any device? :)

  • iEtthy

These guys are crazy my friend. sex and booze….Why would i ever give that up for the net when i can have them all!?!??!!

  • grekoff

Rogers did not confirm if the 34% who suggested this were sober while being polled.

  • Vinny

Yup it official! Price gouging and mass layoffs has given Rogers enough money to waste on stupid surveys such as this! Another win for Rogers Innovations Team…i****s…

  • Paul

Now we know why our cell phone bills are too high. They are doing spedning thousands of dollars doing stupid surveys like this.BTW…I had a coffee with a piece of chocolate, then had sex only after I had a beer before I wrote this comment.:)

  • Aaron

But the survey fails to mention the 36% where the internet has cost them their job, the 47% where the internet has cost them their marriage and the 14% where on-line gambling has cost them their home.

    • JaymmerMan

because the internet did not cause them to loose their job and/or marriage. Their own ignorance and/or stupidity did

  • Will Lee

I would give up Rogers entirely.

  • ASH

Rogers, why don’t u use our money giving us a proper service for a change! who needs such stupid surveys?

  • shaggyskunk

34% of rogers users, rely on alcohol to pay their rogers bill.

  • Zeake

That 6%. They’re having sex with the WRONG people!

    • vn33

That 6% probably never get regular sex in the first place !! lol !

  • John

6% of the population are Forever Alones.

  • mad@inc

WHY CAN’T WE VOTE ANYMORE, MOBILE SYRUP SHAME ON YOU. IT WAS A PART OF MY DAILY ENTERTAINING

  • awsaws

Forever alone here. And yes internet > sex. To the person asking what if the power goes out: my tablet has a 9 he+7hr dock = 16 he battery backup. Power should be restored by then

  • shaggyskunk

Survey Says: rogers voted least liked service provider!

I only got a computer one years ago, it is more of a time burner, I really could live without it, I find it wastes my time. but my husband uses the kijiji and google quite a bit. really find it is not the best thing for people, should be outside and doing other things more.

  • Dan Levy

39% value the internet over electricity? Are they unaware that a computer is a useless paperweight without electricity. You can’t have the internet without electricity but you can have electricity without the internet.

47% would make better buying decision if they could scan a bar code and find out about a company’s social responsibility practices. I call BS on this! If people gave that much of a crap they would be googling every brand name before they bought, the ability to scan a bar code isn’t the key aspect here. Quite frankly I think that number is skewed because there was a large percentage of those polled who answered how they think society thinks they should answer but they’d never actually follow through on this in real life.

  • dtr

I’ve already said this elsewhere, but it bears repeating:

All this does is prove that 34% of Rogers clients can’t multitask…

  • OgtheDim

SEO FTW……..in case you all hadn’t figured that one out yet.

  • OMG_OMG_OMG

More advertising gold from Rogers marketing department full of monkeys.

  • biljaymz

This is a stupid survey. Why don’t we survey the importance of keeping the internet free, like freedom of speech. This internet is going to be how we, as humans are going to organize ourselves. We do not need Paradoid moralistic control freeks impeding our access at this early stage of what the internet was ment to do for us. Vic Toews should have a copy of this by now.

  • Tiarra

If I could find and visit anyone in the world rellay quickly and easily, I would walk up to the CEO of Rogers and slap him and/or whomever else thought of this idea.
