Facebook for Android was updated yesterday to version 1.9, and even if it didn’t fix the app’s main flaw (it does not follow the Android 4.0 Holo guidelines) there were a few notable improvements that will make most users happy.
It appears that Facebook has finally turned on GPU rendering for those devices that support it, enabling much smoother scrolling on the timeline. The interface, from transitions to typing, seems overall to perform much better than before.
In a bizarre twist, Facebook seems to have obsoleted its dedicated Messenger app by bundling a Messenger icon (along with a Camera icon) with the main app. You can now receive push notifications for messages, add users to a group message and generally do all of what you could do in the standalone Messenger now in Facebook proper.
