RIM and NHLPA launch the Players’ PlayBook video series

This is very cool, and very Canadian. RIM has supplied 5 NHL players with a PlayBook – packed with OS 2.0 – and came up with an opportunity to go behind the scenes and somewhat follow them off the ice. The chosen players are Scott Hartnell from the Flyers, Bobby Ryan from the Ducks, Joffrey Lupul from the Leafs, Martin Biron of the Rangers and Michael Grabner from the Islanders. The program is called the “NHLPA Players’ PlayBook” and each player will record and upload a 90 second personal video every day to the dedicated website (playbook.nhlpa.com). It’s a good way for RIM to market the PlayBook and its features – all the videos that the players upload are recorded from the HD camera in the PlayBook. I checked out the site, saw Scott Hartnel have a burger with his kids. In addition to the player videos, every Monday there’ll be a fan poll, a question and answer sessions on Wednesdays.

Colin Campbell, NHLPA Director of Corporate Partnerships, said “NHL players live exciting lives both on and off the ice. This unique program gives fans an opportunity to get a glimpse into players’ lives in a way that has never been available to them in the past. This is very cool stuff. Together with BlackBerry, we’re thrilled to provide this access.”

  1. Just when you think RIM is down and out they reinvent themselves like this.

They are back in a huge way!!!!

Apple and Android have no chance!

  3. BD, not sure if you are being serious?? REALLY?
But, ya good on RIM! They are definitely trying to get away from being “your father’s Oldsmobile” image.
It’s pretty sad that some people seem as though they’d be happy to see RIM fail. Does anybody really want another Nortel?

3 out of those 5 players are canadian by the way. As for the teams, they’re clearly going after large (Phi, NY x 2, Ana, Tor) markets. They already have a strong market share in canada, they want to expand in the US where they have 10x the population

  6. Schultzer…. The reason is not the point, the point IS some people seem to be rooting for another Great Canadian company to fail. Fraud…. Bre-x now that was fraud. Nortel engineered & manufactured REAL products, and no you can’t compare the MANAGEMENT of the two companies.

  8. This is going to be fun to track and watch. If any of you watch 24/7 on HBO, this would be the same thing, just more social and less drama

    • This is ridiculous. If RIM does nothing you say “they have to do something!”, then they do something and you bash it because it’s not enough?
This campaign is obviously for younger people and it’s showing off its multimedia prowess. They’re hardly going to show of BES email to young hockey fans.
Besides, I work in the government and they more or less have to go with playbook so they don’t need to advertise their BES.
Give them a break, they’re letting hockey celebrities use a playbook for free, relax.

  12. This is pretty cool actually. I’ll probably only check in with Biron and Lupul, but pretty good marketing ploy!
