Samsung launches Galaxy Ace 2 and mini 2 with Android 2.3

Samsung may get most of its press from high-end devices like the Galaxy Note and S2 but there are a lot of low- to mid-range Android phones riding just under the radar. The Galaxy Ace and mini were two such devices — pint-sized versions of their larger siblings — and they were both successful enough, it seems, to warrant sequels.

The Galaxy Ace 2 boasts a 3.8-inch WVGA display, an 800Mhz dual-core processor, 768MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, a 5MP camera, a 1500mAh battery, and a baseband with 3G support up to 14.4Mbps.

The Galaxy mini 2 sports a 3.27-inch HVGA display, an 800Mhz single-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, a 3MP camera, a 1300mAh battery and a baseband with 3G support up to 7.2Mbps.

Both devices will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread with TouchWIZ 4, and come bundled with Samsung’s various Hubs and ChatON Messenger.

No word on whether these devices will be arriving in Canada anytime soon, but they are scheduled to launch in Europe starting in late March for the mini 2, and early April for the Ace 2. What do you make of these low- and mid-range products from Samsung? The Galaxy Ace is currently offered by Telus and Koodo, and the Galaxy mini can be had at Mobilicity for a song.

  1. Put them in prepaid boxes for under $100, they will sell like hot cakes.

    • Couple them with gift cards from various retailers worth $50-$100 and they will also sell like hot cakes.

    • This phone trumps (in my opinion) the Galaxy W that Bell has for $250. Dual CPU at 800Mhz (vs 1.4Ghz single core) and 3.8 vs 3.7.
If they sell it at $250 it will be the new “optimus one of 2012″
Whatever the price, when you compare it with the iphone 4s it puts it to shame. The only thing for the 4s is the better screen but not worth it 3x the price.

  2. For a low/midrange device, the Ace 2 looks pretty good. A (relatively) large display, large battery, dual core processor and a camera with a good resolution. However, Touchwiz really sucks.

  3. The author is missing two VERY important specs from the ACE2:
Wifi Direct: The ability to “talk/transmit” with wifi WITHOUT a wifi spot/kinda what you can do with BluTooth but with a bigger range and without a wifi spot (as required before)

GLONASS capable: The Russian version of GPS (American version) This means that this phone can connect to TWO different constellation of satellites (50 aprox) for faster locks, better accuracy and improved reception in “Urban Canyons”
Considreing that GLONNAS was completed two months ago, and this phone comes with both radios, a big Kudos to Samsung!
C’mon Daniel/ Syrup; this is a REAL story, not a software released 10 months later!

  5. 3.8″ vs 4″
Why didn’t they just put a 4″ in it??
    a-To save battery ??
    b-To save cost???

    I think/hope its b.
This would be better than a Nexus S.
Having a dual core 800Mhz is brilliant! it will save a lot of battery with one core working and will have the performance of a 1.4GHz phone!
Kinda wish the screen was 4″ but I rather have a 3.8 that gives me a FULL day battery, rather than a 4 that keeps me looking for a plug in the aft.
Price it properly and it will sell well.
