TELUS brings Optik “On The Go” to TV customers in Western Canada

TELUS is a big player in the IPTV market in Western Canada with its Optik TV service, and today they are unveiling their Optik “On The Go” service for mobile users. Described as a portal to watch commercial-free shows and movies on demand, it can be downloaded via an Android and iOS app, which supports both phones and tablets.

Content comes from Super Channel, Hollywood Suite, Family Channel, Disney XD, Disney Jr, and Baby TV in English, French and Mandarin. Though you can stream over 4G with Android devices, the iOS app limits you to WiFi-only streaming, likely because it does not have the bandwidth necessary over 3G for high-quality broadcasts.

This is a big deal for Telus’ nascent LTE network, which is expected to launch in the coming weeks with the LG Optimus LTE, Samsung Galaxy Note and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE tablet.

The app is available for Optik TV subscribers in British Columbia and Alberta, though it is wireless provider-agnostic, for iOS or Android. Full press release after the break.

Watch whenever you want, wherever you want, with Optik on the go
TELUS’ second innovation is called Optik on the go, which allows Optik TV customers to view a selection of commercial free TV On Demand shows and movies on their mobile devices*, tablets and laptops – at home, in coffee shops, airports, and on the move. TELUS customers will also be able to experience the service on TELUS’ soon-to-be-launched, blazing fast 4G LTE wireless network.

Optik on the go allows users to start, pause, rewind and fast forward their shows just like they do at home.

The service is available to Optik TV customers in British Columbia and Alberta. In addition, subscribers can access and enjoy the application anywhere they can access the Internet, offering a great entertainment option for travelers.Optik on the go offers TV On Demand shows and movies from Super Channel, Hollywood Suite, Family Channel, Disney XD, Disney Jr, and Baby TV in English, French and Mandarin. The content library will continue to grow throughout 2012 and beyond as new shows and movies will be added constantly.

Optik on the go is a free application. There is no additional charge for Optik TV customers to watch select TV On Demand shows and movies from channels they already subscribe to. Tablet and smartphone users can enjoy the service without incurring data charges by using Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet. When connecting via a mobile network, data usage charges would apply.

To learn more about Optik on the go, visit telus.com/optikonthego. Download the free Optik on the go application to an Android or Apple Smartphone or Tablet or access the online application at telus.com/optiktvonline.

* Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch can access Optik TV programming over Wi-Fi only.

  3. Telus doesn’t provide Optik TV in Eastern Canada – you guys are blessed with Bell Fibe TV instead.

  4. Telus has infrastructure only in AB/BC. Central Canada has Bell and Rogers.

I hope it’s a free service. That would help compete against Bell and Rogers who recent bought out TSN and say “Bell and Rogers will be competing with each other”(more like collusion) and making customers pay $1/hr to watch tv on mobile devices.

  6. it’s not a great variety so far. but if they add some better content it could really take off. too much kid’s content right now, but that could be useful for parents

  8. Tried to use it, will not run.
Say “Device security has been compromised. Jailbroken devices are not permitted to use this service”

I am surprised that android and iOS have this app so soon, I would have thought that Microsoft would had pressured telus into supporting or allowing only WP7 devices for a year or so.
Optik is a Microsoft technology for those unaware.

    • The WPS bottun activates WPS (wifi protected setup) Press and hold the WPS bottun until the red light turns on. Then, within two minutes or until the red light turns off. Press the WPS bottun on a device you wish to connect to the router?s wireless network. The device will automatically join the router?s wireless network with out entering the wireless network key. If your device doesn’t have a WPS bottun, Your wireless network key is on the bottom of your Actiontec Router.

    • You can already use your xbox as a set top box for optik. So that would be redundant.

As well the android app force closes every time I try to open it on the Transformer Prime with ics.

  12. @crimosina and Big 3
Both of you are wrong. There is Optik TV for Telus in eastern Canada especially in eastern Quebec. They provide landline, internet and TelusTV

  16. I’ve had this app for a few weeks now on Android so I’m surprised to see this article now. I am able to stream over 3G and Wifi. Originally, they had very little content on it, but recently they’ve added quite a bit. Hollywood Storm started out with one movie LOL. Quality seems to be dependent on bitrate and adjusts accordingly esp. over 3G where the bitrate is not stable.

This is a nice step forward over the competition and a great selling point. Hopefully, they will allow streaming of shows you have recorded on your PVR to your devices in the future (I heard this is possible).
