“Nokia Belle not available” in Canada

Possibly some unfortunate news for those Nokia users who’ve been waiting for the big OS upgrade to Belle, formally Symbian Belle. Nokia promised a February 2012 rollout and today they started to push it out to Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01 and Nokia C7 users. However, us Canadians might be waiting a bit longer, or may never see the new OS arrive. According to the Nokia website it boldly states that “Nokia Belle not available” on any of the associated handsets. Nokia does offer a bit more insight into what exactly “Nokia Belle not available” means. At the bottom of the webpage it boldly says that “Nokia Belle will not be launched for this product code and/or country”. There’s no technical reason that Canada should be excluded, perhaps it’ll be in carrier testing soon and this is simply an error.

  1. Well that’s just not nice.. They must be in love with the Windows platform way too much to go back and care about the exisiting customers.

    • WOAHHH, Rogers really knows how to “slap their customers in the face” that have an N8 through them! I’m glad I splurged and got an N8 from Pmall, technically from Malayasia, unlocked and what not! Got my update A-OK!! Belle is a beautiful OS, improvement in kinectic scrolling, and memory management, its rejeuvenated the functionality of my orange-colored N8, hope it comes to Canada soon!! Heck, get ur Rogers N8 unbranded or to another country code than update to Belle, it’s well worth it….warranty’s likely done right?

      Cheers All!

  7. all these negative comments. Nokia rolls out by country. Canada, US and Australia have always been last. Not like we give them a lot of love – someone has to be last. But we get all the updates in the end. No great tragedy.

    • If you look at the source link, it will show you that the US already has the update avalible. There are a bunch of countries under WIP but the only ones that have a “Your not getting it” message is Canada, Israel, and Australia.

It’s odd in a way, that ever where get it but those 3.

My N8 is a US product code, so I should get it, but mine isn’t updating at the moment.

  13. Guys!

You do realize this is the carriers fault right? Nokia would love to be able to give you an update, but carriers don’t give a s**t and don’t cooperate with them to create the specific firmware for their needs, like say branding or crapware like Rogers MyAccount.

Which is why my friend with a Rogers N8 is still on Symbian^3. It’s sad s**t is what it is!

  15. Alex is right.

    Blame the carrier, not Nokia…

I have a non-carrier specific North American Variant N8, live in Canada, am a Rogers subscriber, and I installed Belle through Nokia Software Updater this morning no problem.

So to all the misinformed commenters–do some research before posting useless opinionated banter.

    • it has nothing to do with the SIM but the product code. Even an unlocked Rogers phone will not get the update due to the product code. Likewise, a variant on the rogers network will get the update. So before you say that we are getting the update, please specify if you are using the phone given to you from Rogers or just their SIM and network.

  16. It should be a reason why Canada among only handful others who excluded.

Whole world, including poorest African/Asian countries, where ARPU way less than in Canada; including countries like Iceland, where small population and exotic language significantly reduce return on investment for update – all of them got an update, but Canada.

Is it our providers hellishly greedy? Or CRTC bureaucracy grip deadly? Or…? Not sure what to think about, but something smells rotten in state of.

Do you own a Rogers X7 with type RM-659 or an x7 with RM-707.

I read that flashing an RM-659 with RM-707 files will brick the phone.

  21. If you are in Canada and you have a SIM from a country that has the update, put that SIM in your phone and try to update.

I did this today with a Vodaphone UK SIM in my N8 and it updated to Belle. The laptop running Nokia Suite was connected through Shaw internet, so the update seems to be dependent on the SIM.

    • If the phone was issued by Rogers/Belle, you will not get the update no matter what since the phone has a specific product code which is not dependent on what kind of SIM is in it.

Your N8 was simply not bought from Rogers.

  26. The update is Product Code Specific. My Nokia C7 was WindMobile with product code . I updated to official Belle following the simple steps.

    1) Make full backup and just in case copy contents of Mass Memory and Memory card to your disk.
    2) If you are in North America Download 059B5R9 no brand firmware using NAVIFIRM 1.5
    3) Refurbish using PHOENIX
    4) Restore backups

Worked in my case without any issues except the loss of some applications that were installed in Phone Memory.

  28. I contacted both Rogers and Nokia yesterday.

The Nokia representative said the update will come soon just wait. So then I told him about the update availability page and that Belle will not be available in Canada and he was very surprised that this web page existed. So basically he had no clue what was going on.

He said they cannot update me to Belle since that would be considered a breach of contract by Rogers.

I then contacted Rogers and they know that they need to approve and release firmwares to us, but they had no word on Belle.

So in short, there are no clues nor information on whether we will get Belle or not.

Us X7 RM-659 users are stuck for now since RM-707 only got the Belle update.

  29. I have an unbranded E6, unbranded N8, and a Rogers X7-00.1. I’ve gotten notifications to update my N8 and E6, but not the X7. From what I know, you cannot install a generic firmware into the X7-00.1 like people have mentioned above. That is because the X7-00.1 is PHYSICALLY different (from what I have been told). The specs are actually different than the non-branded phone.

But the other phones, like the N8, C7, C6-01 might be identical hardware to their unbranded counterparts. If you can verify this, then you can probably install the unbranded Belle firmware with no problems. But you’ll have to use software like Phoenix to do it.

Looks like people above have reported success installing Belle on carrier branded C6-01 and C7, and maybe the N8 if Rui can verify that it’s a Rogers N8 or not.

Nokia is GREAT with rolling out updates for older phones. But there is a breakdown somewhere between Finland and Canada.

After my pains with my Rogers X7, I have vowed to never buy a carrier-branded phone again! I found a great shop locally here that sells all the good phones at good prices with FREE shipping in Canada! This is where I got my N8 and E6.

    http://www.omegacell.com/

Now having said all that… I am keeping my N8 and E6 on Anna. I think I’ll wait a few months for all the bugs to get worked out. I’ve heard about a lot of app incompatibility with Belle. And it’s not like Anna ISN’T working well for me as-is.

  30. Hello everyone,
I just contacted the Nokia service center, and they assured me that the Symbian Belle will be finally released for canadian Nokia users somethere in Spring 2012. So, lets just be patient, and temporarily forget about this update. The time will come and our phones will be updated.

I decided not to risk with the firmware flash..

  32. OK guys, I successfully installed Belle on my C7. Here is my instructions.

I own Nokia C7 branded with Wind Mobile (Canada) with a Product Code 059F545.

    1) I installed Phoenix Service Software 2011.46.007.47652
on my laptop, then launched the program. Selected connection USB, where my phone was attached

    2) Go “Tools” -> “Data Package Download”. Type 059B5R9. Then, “check availability” and “download”

    3) Once download complete, close that window and go to “File” -> “Scan Product”

    4) Go “Flashing” -> “Firmware Update”. Where “Product code” click button and select 059B5R9. Click “Refurbish”

    5) The process went rather quickly. Believe me, I was really scared. Hopefully, no errors occured.

    6) My phone restarted, took several minutes for installation preparations… and here we go – I have ready to use Symbian Belle.

    7) The last step, do restore of all your contacts, messages, ect. The brand new Nokia Belle works great and fast and without any issues. LOOKS GREAT, love it!

PS my phone still shows the old product code 059F545, but I really don’t care now. I also don’t care about if Belle becomes available for canadian branded phones ;P
If you are brave, do it yourself and enjoy Nokia Belle!

  39. straight from nokia canada

Thank you for emailing the Nokia Careline.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that your issue has caused you.

In response to your concern, we would like to inform you that all non-carrier variants of Nokia C6-01, C7-00, E6-00, E7-00 and N8-00 devices can be upgraded to Symbian Belle. However, please be reminded that all the said Nokia devices, including the Nokia X7-00 device, which are purchased through Canadian carrier channels will not be upgraded to Symbian Belle.

If your Nokia device is an unlocked phone or not tied up with any service provider, we suggest that you use the Nokia Suite application in order to update the device’s software. Before updating, you might like to backup your phone’s contents using Nokia Suite. These can be restored once the update is complete.

To download the Nokia Suite application, kindly follow the link provided below.

    http://www.nokia.ca/get-support-and-software/product-support/nokia_suite/compatibility-and-download

Kindly follow the procedures below on how you can back up your files:

    1. Connect the device to your computer with a USB cable. Your device may ask you how you want to connect. Select “PC Suite” and then select “OK”.

    2. In Nokia Suite, select “Tools” then “Backup”. Nokia Suite reads your device and prepares a list of information that can be backed up.

    3. Select the information that you want to back up. If you want to change where the backup file is saved, select “Browse” and choose another location.

    4. Select “Start” to begin the backup. Do not disconnect or switch off your device during the process. If you need to stop it, select “Stop”. Nokia Suite will reach a safe stop point and will then stop the back up. Click “Finish” to close the backup wizard.

Once you have finished saving all your files, you may now perform the software update for your device also by using Nokia Suite. Please follow the steps provided below:

    1. Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable.
    2. Start “Nokia Suite”.
    3. Select “Tools”.
    4. Choose “Software updates”.
    6. Make sure that you have selected the Nokia Store update.
    7. Then follow the on screen prompts until your update is complete.

For your reference, you may visit the link provided below for the list of product codes and Nokia devices that can be upgraded to Symbian Belle in Canada.
