Walmart has seen a great deal of love from the newer Canadian wireless players. Both Public Mobile and Mobilicity have found some sort of shelf space, now WIND Mobile has done the same. The carrier stated that they have worked out a deal with 67 Walmart locations to bring an exclusive $88 package. Here’s what it includes: Huawei U1250, a $10 instant Pay Your Way service credit, 12 months unlimited WIND-to-WIND calling add-on and 12 months unlimited Canada/US texting add-on.
(Thanks Alex!)

Not so hot. I guess this might be good for some people who have a lot of friends on Wind, or for people who like texting a lot with a non-QWERTY phone, but it’s probably just better to wait around for a deal directly from Wind or use Mobilicity instead.

Nice entry-level option. That’s about all I can say.

Hopefully they also make it into places like Bestbuy and Futureshop.
The more the new carriers are visible to the average person, the lower the incumbent prices…

“… unlimited WIND-to-WIND calling…”
hmm.. i don’t think that many people will actually need it.. there are not enough people around with this brand…
I don’t see anything special in this promo, looks like it is simple PR… anyways every person that will get it will have to order some voice plan…

If they want to talk, there’s affordable add-ons. See WIND.ca/payyourway or look at my post above. (Not sure if Free Incoming can be combined with the Walmart deal.)
Several people, however, will be fine with just texting. WIND-to-WIND calling will be a nice bonus, especially to add WIND customers.

Well you add up the cost of the phone, $10 card, texting plan and you’re saving around $30 bucks, which isn’t bad.
So $88 for a year is pretty good.
That’s assuming you don’t put more then the $10 in for the year, which I’m not sure if you can do that without the phone account being frozen.

No, i’m sure it works similarly to their 2010 “Text for a year” deal where you payed $99 for a Huawei U1250 and unlimited SMS. This excluded the WIND-to-WIND calling, which was 10¢/minute.
With this new deal, credits are only needed if you want to call non-WIND customers, enable a voicemail, send international SMS, browser the Internet, or other features like that. The plans can still be a great deal for people who don’t need 24/7 unlimited calling. The Internet, however, is only worth it on a BlackBerry.
It would be frustrating and misleading to shut down customers on this “12 months” promo if they don’t top up after a month!

Well… The thing is these new guys need to be everywhere so that the general public is aware of there are choices out there other the big three.
Since the inception of Wind and other folks, prices are coming down slowly but surely.

For those who don’t like the concept of texting on this phone, remember that WIND used to charge $99 for the same deal in 2010, but *without* WIND-to-WIND calling and with only a $5 bonus credit instead of $10. The new $88 Walmart bundle, however, is equivalent to $7.33/month, instead of $10/month, and bundles a disposable phone.
Also, the SIM card isn’t tied the the U1250. It’s possible to purchase a $49 Huawei U6150 (regularly $89) at some Loblaws stores. There’s a lot of flexibility, like $10/month for unlimited incoming (if it isn’t still free) or $15/month for 17h evenings and weekends, both on the AWS network. It’s like making a delicious pizza!
Big 3? RoBell include R2R and B2B calling as an optional feature, but most people would rather have early evenings or unlimited SMS instead. Telus and the Big 3 flankers also charge extra for network calling. WIND is leading the pack. Instead of “adding people on the same account”, ALL WIND customers can call each other for free!
To conclude, this is a great deal for people who want unlimited text and WIND-to-WIND calling at a discount price, where continually expanding WIND coverage exists. Don’t like the phone? Sell it or give it away, then buy another phone! Just make sure to keep the SIM, which will have your valuable, expandable plan.

Wind also has unlimited incoming calls for $0 right now on the pay as you go plan. Add $0.20 a minute calling to anywhere in North America and it actually is a pretty good deal for a pay as you go. I haven’t shopped around for that kind of phone in a while, but the last time I looked no one could really compete with that.

Or the Telephone booth and other like places claiming to have all brands. Walmart is a great step forward but it is still difficult to find Mobilicity and Wind if you are not looking for them.

Anything that promotes WIND / Mob is good as they’re already having an impact on pricing for the Big 3. Distribution in Walmart is a good sign

Great phone to give your kids? If the reason you give them the phone is for safety or to keep in touch would it not be smarter to get them a phone you know will work?
I am sure D1MB1TS justin imbecile warrenlady ( he a cross dresser I hear ) and the other wind trolls would have to agree for a emergency phone this fails.
limited to just zones, you can only talk to someone on wind for free and thats not many people.. real phones for real networks!

Come on, you’re simply lying, and I’m sure you know it. The U1250 can roam on Rogers. You’re telling me Rogers isn’t good enough for emergencies? Who, pray-tell, is? A satellite phone?
Of course non-roaming coverage is more limited, no one has even pretended that it isn’t. Where I live, I almost never wander outside the coverage zone; when I do, I can live with paying a few bucks in roaming fees, considering I’m saving FAR more than that overall.

If I wasn’t so busy being a troll on winds site I could have been first on here telling lies. So blah blah blah warranty blah blah jabroni blah blah. I get much more attention on winds site, and thats all my handlers want, meaningless, unsubstantiated lies, untruths, and meaningless bogeyman scare tactics. None of it has to be true, I get paid by the post.
