Infographic: Current smartphone patent infringement cases

Everyday there seems to be a mobile manufacturer launch a new patent infringement case. It’s big business and companies spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year protecting their intellectual property. Just yesterday RIM was hit by WiLAN, and it was possibly revealed that Apple has already spent upwards of $100 Million in legal fees against HTC. Thankfully somebody has taken the time to make sense of some, not all, of the current cases. As you can see Apple seems to be on everyone’s radar – according to this chart they are involved in one way or another in 12 patent infringement cases, HTC has 5 and RIM has 4.

    • Odd, I seem to see differently. Apple only has three active plaintiff cases. The rest they are defending.

    • @ briggs if you follow the source link and the further link for the Techcrunch article Apple apparently transferred patents to Digitude Innovations, seems kinda weird seeing as how litigious Apple is of late, seems like patent trolling by proxy to me, if this is the case it would bring Apple up to 11 suits total, if you look at the Digitude lawsuits its targeting all of Apples competitors too

      Making them the lawsuit king

  4. Maybe instead of constantly fighting with eachother they should build a phone with a battery life.

  6. Samsung was making phones before Apple was making iPods. Your point is invalid.

  7. You fansboys need a girlfriend,

I guess Apple never learns, they lost the PC war with Micro$oft, now they are losing it to Android, so instead of up the ante do better, sue them, its the Americna way just sue them.

  8. Blame the U.S. Patent Office for all these so-called “patent infringement” cases. The USPO is solely responsible (irresponsible) by issuing patents on things that had no business being patented in the first place.

  9. Google: Makes good notification bar for Android devices

Apple: Has bad notification system for messages, improves and copies Google

Google: Not bothered too much that Apple stole their idea

Apple: Sues Google for having a similar notification bar

  10. What I find interesting is IBM who has a large patent portfolio sues no one. Is it because they want innovation?

    • they just buy out everyone they deem interesting. Its quite a good strategy to be honest. Especially if you have the cash to back it up.

  11. Probably because we’re talking about smartphones. IBM is not part of it.

  12. You guys need to stop focusing on Apple. Ya, they started the patent war, but it’s like WWI. They were just the match used to light the powder keg that was already in place. There needs to be reform in the way patents are handled, including the amount of time they are valid.
