“Refreshed” Nexus S hitting Koodo Mobile tomorrow for $200 [Update]

Koodo Mobile will be adding the Nexus S to their refurbished lineup up tomorrow. This will hit the various stores and the web for a cool $200 outright… all “refreshed” devices come with a 90 day warranty. The good news is that OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming soon to the device.

Update: We received an update to this post, our sources stated to us that the refreshed Nexus are scheduled to arrive today (January 19th) and that some location in the East coast have received them already, but there may be a delay for those stores in Western Canada. In addition, we’ve now been informed that these phones will only be available in store at Koodo shops, not available any resellers or online.

(Thanks tipster!)

  1. Can I buy this, root & unlock it as if I were going to install a custom rom and then use it on a different carrier, ie bell?

If not what would the steps be in being able to use this on bell.

    • Nexus devices are already unlocked – you don’t need to do anything to use it on a different carrier that uses the same frequencies. Koodo sells the I9020A (AT&T) model, which is the same as Bell.

I think Koodo doesn’t sell the Nexus S without a contract though, so you may have to sign up for the $15/month contract and cancel a month in or something to get away with it.

  2. WHOA! I was somewhat disappointed in the GNEX for several reasons and have held out on upgrading from my Optimus One so far…

This just might tide me over until the Moto-Google Nexus Unicorn comes out.

  4. Not bad… still a viable phone. If my NS broke tomorrow I’d be torn between getting another one and spending the cash on a current-gen phone.

  5. @Sam P: Yes you should be able to. Before picking one up, check to see if it unlocked by putting in a bell sim, and see what it does.

    • what in the world are you talking about? The nexus S comes unlocked. The band versions are different, but they are unlocked.

Also, Koodo will make you sign a tab for it. So grab it on a tab, cancel 15 days in. Payout remaining tab. Total cost, 215 + tax.

that said, if you cancel, I believe the warranty would be voided as well. I can’t guarantee it, but double check to make sure.

    • the question was what he needed to use the phone on bell…

the answer is nothing….the PHONE is CARRIER UNLOCKED

…Mattprime86 is referring to the LOCKED BOOTLOADER which only needs to be unlocked if youre installing a custom rom….which is what SamP thought he needed to use it on bell…

buy the phone, pop in any BELL TELUS FIDO ROGERS VIRGIN CHATR sim you want, it will work

    • @Briggs No you do not need a tab to get this Nexus s from Koodo. I just got this nexus from Koodo a month ago. You can pay cash for the nexus s with koodo. All they care about is that you sign up, and after one month of service you can just cancel. No tab or contract needed. Just one month of service is needed thats all.

    • Rooting and unlocking are not the same thing at all. Rooting allows you to access all levels of file on a device (i.e.: apps can access core functions of the phone). That has nothing to do with what network you connect to. Nice try talking out of your arse though.

  7. The nexus s is carrier unlocked, which is what everybody else is referring to. You’re talking about the bootloader being locked, which is true, and requires unlocking.

But the aspect that people really care about is the carrier unlock, which doesn’t exist on the nexus s

  8. Tempting. But the 90 day warranty is concerning.

What do others think? Should the limited warranty be a show stopper?

  9. Tempted by this, how would one be able to buy this and NOT use it Koodo? Would be using it on Bell.

  10. Do i NEED to sign up? Can I buy it outright, walk away and throw my Virgin sim card in it? Will this be in store or online only?

  11. On the koodo website it states that “This phone is only available when purchased on the Koodo Tab, or as an upgrade for existing Koodo customers. It is not available for outright purchase or as a gift order.”

So is the $200 outright price too good to be true for those of us already on contracts with other providers? Or will things magically change when the clock strikes midnight.

All I want to do is buy the phone outright and pop my telus sim card in.

    • Yeah, I know. But what is so incompatible with the i9020a ics version that they are not letting it out though? Even other products like Asus tablets are getting it over us Robelus Nexus S owners. I truly think these and the other i9020a carriers asked google to hold it back so they could milk the Galaxy Nexus sales…

  14. The I9020A still doesn’t have Android 4.0? That sucks, it works great on the I9020T version I have (stock OTA, no root). Hope out comes out for the I9020A soon.

    • The Koodo/Telus/Bell/Rogers version of the phone will not work on Wind and Mobilicity. To work on Wind and Mobilicity you need the AWS version of the Nexus S, which is different from what Koodo sells.

  21. just to clarify a few things all nexus s phones are unlocked to use with differnt carriers. however the bootloader is Locked. so in incase you want to install custom rom you need to unlocked the bootloader. ICS is sweet running it on my telus nexus s using the I9020T verions.

  22. Just a question, why are other android devices getting the ice cream sandwich update, and not the nexus s? I thought Google promised that all pure google devices would always get the officail updates before any other device. So whats Googles problem? release the darn update for the nexus s already. I’m making a promise to myself, if google doesn’t release the update by the end of January, I’m getting rid of the nexus s, and never returning to a android device again. These android devices have major issues cause its like pulling teeth to get updates. The update for 2.3.6 that I got long ago has major issues with it, Wifi hotspot hasn’t worked for me since I updated it to 2.3.6. And a few other wifi, and bluetooth issues since last update. Androids seem like eveytime you get an update something gets fixed, but then somethig else gets broken,,,lol…I wish Google would get there act together. There must be a reason why Koodo has so many refreshed Nexus S devices on hand to sell. may be a sign that theres something wrong with with device or something.

  23. It was reported that the NS has battery problem with ICS so they pulled the updates. If you cant wait do like me and install the I9020T version. note you must unlocked the bootloader and install CWM and the radio files 19020A. its not hard. you can relock the bootloader afterwards. ICS is extreamly beautiful

  24. To add to the discussion about tab or not tab: If you sign up and enter a referral code from an existing customer, you will get a 25$ bonus on the tab. (So will the existing customer.) So you can sign up for the 15$ plan, get 25$ from the referral plus 1,50 from your first month’s bill, cancel and pay off the remaining tab (123,50).

Note that there might be a few cents provincial 911 fee and that taxes will be added.

    • You talked to koodo directly? Or just one of the retail locations?… The little shops they have are so small I wouldn’t be surprised if the ones who don’t have them in stock don’t even know about it… But this sure would suck a*s if it was just a fake rumour…. This would be a great time for mobilesyrup to run an update in the situation.
