This is one of the coolest demonstrations that I’ve seen at CES 2012. HzO has created a “cutting-edge technology” called WaterBlock and it does exactly what the name suggests – blocks water from getting into your electronic devices. So this means that there’s potentially no more water damage caused by drops in the pool, sink, toilet, steam, rain… anything to do with water. The video shows a functioning Samsung Galaxy SII immersed in water for about 10 seconds, then removed an working perfectly. Apparently how the magic happens is that the entire device is doused with a thin layer of a nano gas coating that basically forms a protective barrier. HZO has been showing this protection for a couple years now, first demoed it with iPods, but are finally in talks with various manufacturers about making it part of the manufacturing process. Paul Clayson, HzO president and CEO, said he’s expecting it to be available this Summer. This would potentially made devices have a longer life cycle, plus save the manufactures millions of dollars every year from water damage.
This is awesome. Hooray for CES!

Cool tech but I wonder if this “nano gaz” will be counteractive for the touchscreen.

This is really for the women in our lives who in a rush to pee after a few drinks launch their cell phone from their back pockets to their death below.

Bring back Billy Mays. He’d do an awesome infomercial on this product. “Call in the next 5 minutes and get a 2nd order free”

Pretty much everything that is electronic and portable needs this. That includes phones, digital cameras, and even my car starter remote (which I have to replace after dropping it in a puddle just outside my car).

Although this technology definitely has a use for phones in particular I can see it being used in all sorts of electronics. This isn’t just a breakthrough for the mobile world, it’s a breakthrough for the entire world of technology for the consumer, business or even military. The list goes on and on. So far at ces this has most impressed me.

japanese carriers have had this in their phones for years, you can blame it on our companies that “innovate” to be stalling the process.
more like, finally it’s here…. took long enough.

I’ve known about this for a few years now, but it was really hard to avoid being pessimistic about it. After all, water damage is basically never covered under warranty. Instead it’s just another reason people go out and buy more electronics to replace the ones that were broken.

GAH! That is epic! That and Gorilla Glass then your phone is unstoppable!
Too bad HzO is a privately held corporation.

There is one problem. As you saw he had a blue band on the battery to hold it in place. If water gets between the battery and phone connectors, won’t it cause problems? Like even with this technology, I would assume you would need to remove the battery and wait for it to dry?

I’m sure they will find a way to waterproof the contacts for the battery, maybe a rubber seal around the contacts? So basically unless the battery falls out it’ll be fine.
Also, the band was to keep the battery from coming out, not many people will have the backplate of the their phone off while its going in the dunk tank. My phone was fully assembled when i got tossed into the pool with it in my pocket
