Apple deemed as Canada’s “Leading Edge” brand, Google second

A survey conducted by Ipsos Reid, on behalf of Advertising Week, reveals the most influential and “leading edge” brand in Canada is Apple. Are you surprised? Apparently the survey was conducted between November 23rd to November 30th, 2011 of 1,013 random Canadian adults, probably all those creative types in advertising. I digress, Ipsos said there were 6 factors that went into deciding the term “leading edge”: brand influence, trustworthiness, relevance, presence, corporate citizenship and engagement.

Here’s are the top 10 that made the list:
1. Apple
2. Google
3. Ikea
4. Microsoft
5. Cirque de Soleil
6. Coca-Cola
7. President’s Choice
8. Tim Hortons
9. YouTube
10. SONY

Personally, I’d have liked to have seen Google come out on top, mainly for increased adoption of their Android OS this year. Certainly thrilled to see Tim Horton’s on the list.

Steve Levy, President of Ipsos Reid, said “It’s been amazing to see what Apple has accomplished over the past decade, through the introduction of innovative and iconic products. While being seen as leading edge is only one factor in brand influence it is definitely one of the most important, something that Apple has recognized and excelled at achieving.”

  6. Quite sad that RIM/BlackBerry is nowhere to be found.

This is good news for Windows Phone, however.

Let this be yet another wake-up call for RIM.

(Syrup, can you fix your comment system, please?)

  9. Cirque de Soleil sweet!

im always curious about these kinds of surveys. did they only want to find 1013 people or did they just give up at that point?

Before any survey is published they should state what the original targets were and why. population %, did random mean end result was more of one group of people vs another?

  11. not a surprise. Apple markets a hell of a lot harder than Google, and android, while having a larger market share, has the problem of being known as android, coming from <>. Not as a google phone (bar the nexus line obviously). You ask the average Canadian what iOS is, and they might be able to respond with apple, but no guarantee.

More importantly though, google took second and ninth place.

  12. Apple is leading edge? Wow, what a joke. They’re so leading edge, they don’t want to support LTE and NFC technology yet because it’s not “mainstream”. The app drawer that looks still identical since the very first iOS would also have to mean they’re so leading edge. Buying and integrating Siri is also so leading edge too. You have to buy it before anyone else does it.

  16. I would title this list as

“Most over-saturate and over-advertised brands in Canada for 2011″
NOT the most leading edge brands.

  17. Wow. Apparently the average Canadian is retarded. President’s Choice, Coca Cola being “leading edge”? What the f**k? Also Youtube IS Google. Can we just pretend this survey never happened?

    • Every idea is stolen.

Apple stole the idea of touchscreen smartphones and made it soooo much better than what it used to be.

Google stole the idea of a touch screen interface and made it open source and called it Android.

But the difference here is before apple there WAS no main stream touch screen smartphone. There were a few but they had a horrible OS and not anyways close to what apple did.

Yes some people feel Android is better than APple. BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS Apple was the first to revoluanize it. (Don’t bother arguing unless you have an example of a smartphone prior to the iPhone that was close to what the iPhone/Android was.

  19. Coca Cola is one thing that I’ll agree is indeed ‘Leading Edge’; not only does it taste better than most other beverages, but it’s also “less harmful” unlike certain other drinks (read: booze).

  20. just received my Galaxy Nexus after hearing and seeing all these ads about Ice Cream Sandwich and this news had to pop up? what I have to say is that it explains why almost everyone i see in university are using an iPhone, the only reason why iPhone is a leading brand here in Canada is because of how people influence other people to get it (basically copying other people), the popularity of Apple is big in school here (such as MacBooks for example), I rarely see people with with Android phones except for the people Computer Science & Engineering programs, but overall I see more people with iPhones, but in my opinion, I believe Google should come out on top. Now that i have both iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus, I should play more around with my Galaxy Nexus and see why it is far more better than iPhone

  25. Sad that most people couldn’t think of a leading edge Canadian company … I doubt most even realized that their answer was an American/Multinational corporation.
