Samsung has official gone on record and announced the roll out schedule for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on a few devices. On their blog they state that “GALAXY S II and GALAXY Note will start in the first quarter 2012, and other GALAXY devices will soon follow.” Now, for us Canadians we already saw an “estimate” as to when Bell might be getting ICS for the Galaxy SII – a leaked internal document listed April 2012, so perhaps we’ll see it a bit earlier in “Q1″. No other word from all the other Canadian carriers on when we can expect to see it from them.
The other “upgradable models” Samsung speaks of are the GALAXY S II LTE, GALAXY Note, GALAXY R, GALAXY Tab 10.1, GALAXY Tab 8.9, GALAXY Tab 7.7, and GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus. In Canada, we have the GSII LTE (Rogers), Tab 10.1 (majority of all carriers), Tab 8.9 (Bell and TELUS), and we will be getting the Note in Q1. Samsung gave no indication of when these will be upgraded to 4.0, only that it will “will soon follow” and that the “OS updates schedule for each market according to market situation and carriers’ requirement”.

Looking forward to this!

I’m guessing the S2X from Telus falls under the S2 category I would hope?

It would be great if Telus had it before Bell…lol

No, it doesn’t look like “Galaxy S II” means the variants – the LTE version is listed separately. If Galaxy S II means the variants, then they wouldn’t write it separately. As you may already know, Telus’ Galaxy S II X is the T-Mobile Galaxy S II. The last Galaxy device that was on T-Mobile, the Vibrant, never got Gingerbread, so the track record is pretty bad.

So, anyone who purchased a Samsung Galaxy S is f****d by Samsung? No update to any of the original Galaxy S? I mean, this phone is just one year and a half old.

It kind sucks that the O.G. Galaxy S won’t get an upgrade. The Nexus S has similar specs and ICS works flawlessly on it.

Hopefully its better than the non-sense pre-realease versions I’ve seen on youtube. I hope Samsung uses stock or close to.

Galaxy S may still get it. They didn’t say no, they simply put it out there that the S2 series and tablets (the more recent devices) will be their priority as most older devices are probably nearing upgrade ages anyways.
I do notice though, an unfortunate lack of the Galaxy S Glide on there. While part of the S series technically, it’s still a brand new phone.

I cant wait to get this on my Galaxy S2 LTE, the phone is freaking fast and ICS will just be the desert.

Those images are highly misleading.
I own a SGS2, and I wouldn’t expect this update till Summer 2012. Sammobile.com has been showing alpha-alpha builds of the Bell SGS2 aka Euro-spec ver. with 4.0 but the rom is buggy as hell and IT HAS TOUCHWIZ 4.0.
The only way to get unadulterated ICS is buying a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S or through custom roms.

Doesn’t this pretty much confirm that the Galaxy S II X from Telus will NOT be getting the update? Only the original Galaxy S II (Bell) and the Galaxy S II LTE (Rogers) are getting it. When they say Galaxy S II, they DO NOT mean ALL the Galaxy S II variants – otherwise they wouldn’t list the LTE variant separately. Keeping in mind that the previous Galaxy device on T-Mobile, the Vibrant, didn’t get the Gingerbread update, the chances of the GS2X getting ICS go down even more.

TELUS’ Samsung Galaxy S2X will be getting the ICS update as it was listed on the product website.

It doesn’t say when though…it could be Q1, Q2, or later…

Question. Would the touch capacitive buttons still be in use? or would Android 4.0 only rely on the on-screen buttons like the Galaxy Nexus? Kind of important if I’m going to use the white S2 and those touch capacitive buttons are useless – might as well buy the black one since those buttons will be hidden.

Not sure if you’re being serious.. but the Nexus S is receiving 4.0 OTAs and it has capacitive buttons

ICS is designed to scan for capacitive buttons before it generates the on-screen buttons. If your device still sports buttons, ICS will direct all interactions to those buttons. Only future devices which are purposely designed without on-board buttons will make their own on-screen buttons.

@Todd Mobilesyrup already reported that Telus would bring the update to the Hercules sometime in 2012… It’d be silly if they go back on this and never bring it?
And if they do that I’ll be quite angry… lol.

The galaxy s2 sold by bell/virgin mobile is the international version, so I think that one would get the update first. Its the most popular version of the phone, and the only one that actually uses a samsung processor?
I’m guessing the variants will take a bit longer to get updated with all the different configurations.

When they state S2, they’re referring to the original S2, the version they sold by Bell/Virgin, Europe, some of Asia and especially South Korea (w/ NFC). It has the best overall HW, so once updated to 4.0.x, theoretically it should outperform the Galaxy Nexus. Plus, all of the genuine Samsung S2 accessories such as perforated case, extended 2000mAh battery w/ cover, vehicle dock, and cradle/dock (all of which I ordered from the UK) are designed specifically for the I9100M. I don’t believe there are any genuine accessories for the variants, so you’re stuck settling for ill-fitting cases and docks.

It won’t matter if you got your phone from any of the three major carriers in canada or not what will matter is the model. if your among the SGS 2 owners you can bet that your phone will be upgradeable and if you have managed to get the International version of the phone your upgrade should be ready now!

I love the Galaxy S2x but I am unsure whats taking the upgrade so long.
A note also to samsung, who ever comes out with the ability to access internet on the phone through USB first without having to hack will take my business.
