Walmart Canada is no stranger to selling wireless, they have majority of the brands – Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Koodo, Virgin and Fido. Recently newer carrier Mobilicity entered into a distribution agreement with the big box retailer in Toronto, Calgary, Surrey, Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver. Now, another new entrant has worked their way into Walmat’s “Action Alley” areas, Public Mobile devices can now be purchased at 48 Walmart stores in Ontario and Quebec (39 in Ontario and 9 in the Greater Montreal area). Public’s low-cost plans and devices actually makes sense in Walmart.
Pretty sad that Wind and Mibilicity still don’t have any distribution deals in any major stores besides the Superstore.

Probably 2 months of the $25 plan, similar to the one at Wind and Mobilicity, but with province-wide long distance.

Here are my thoughts on this:
Public’s deal is cheaper than Mobilicity! The Samsung “Oyster” C414 from the latter carrier is $50, and includes only one month of an inferior $25 plan. Two months at $40 plus the Kyocera Tomo is the cheapest mobile offer i’ve seen in Canada. However, the only minor omission is the lack of a digital camera. But who wants VGA, 1.3 or even 2 megapixel pictures anyway!?
Other concerns are that CDMA ties you to Public. Not happy with the operator and want to switch to another? Time to buy another phone, because Bell and Telus don’t accept foreign CDMA devices. At least you get two months included to try out the service at a great discount.
To sum it up, it’s too bad that Toronto and Montréal are the only metropolitan regions to offer this service. No Public for me. :’( There are pros and cons to this deal, but if you live where the Public network is available, this is a cheap way to test the service with a basic, no frills, no thrills phone.

business is not about shame, its about winning i will assume that Wal Mart realized that Mobi was going out of business and that the Wal Mart customer was asking for Public better value for them

Nice display really well located… If Wal Mart gives Public such a great spot they must see a long term partnership. I can tell you I worked in the trade (Hershey) and you don’t get that spot easily … Good for you Public
