Fido giving new customers first month of service for free

Fido just launched the BlackBerry Curve 9360 and it seems they want to possibly entice a few more customers this holiday season. If you sign up with them you’ll be given the first month of service for free. Good dog.

(Thanks tipster!)

  6. They’re quite big terms, two or three years contract. Not even one-year is included, let alone month-to-month like Roberto remarked. Can this be combined with $0 activation fee? Regardless, Syrup’s reporting is biased, to Fido’s advantage. :’(

  9. That one month of free service can’t justify for the following:

    1) Horrible data speed (speaking for Toronto, especially downtown)
    2) Lack of attractive devices except for Nexus phones and iPhone
    3) Inability to put a phone on tab

I switched to Koodo, though still finding myself stuck with Point#2 from above, point#1 and point#3 are taken care of.

  10. My son and daughter are with Fido before and now with Koodo.

Fido dollars sucks. You can use it to redeem a smartphone but you have to have a plan over $50. Also, there are too many restrictions on how you can use Fido dollars which makes it almost unusable!

My son bought himself a 4S from Apple and my daughter got herself a Galaxy S2 from Newegg… Yes, the costs are expansive but they no longer stuck with a bill that is over $90 + tax a month. Data is optional! Since they are in universities and Wifi is everywhere, they can cut down the bill by at least 40%.

Rogers really treat Fido like a toilet. So, 3 years out, the savings from the monthly fees are ending subsidizing their phones!

    • Agreed. Fido Dollars were useless to me because I wanted a smart phone but refused to take a data contract, which is a requirement to be able to redeem Fido Dollars. In the end, I took my 3 lines and left Fido for Koodo (walking away from a number of useless Fido Bucks). Although not perfect, Koodo is *significantly* more in tune with what I want from a budget phone company.

  11. By the way, Fido charges you activation fee if you don’t have a two year term with them. With Koodo… NONE! So, your first month free really just covers a bit more than the activation fee!

  13. i can’t believe fido has any customers. they can put the one month free up their a*s. how about reduce 3-year term contracts to 2-year ones and slash the plan prices by at least 20%

  14. I don’t see why any company would give the first month free without an agreement, it makes no sense. Customers would just leave after 1 month of service and go somewhere else and it would be abused by tourists that come to visit for a month and just cancel afterwards. Just saying…

    • @Max Virgin Mobile gave me my first month free ($50 credit) which was a promotion they ran from October 15-31 this year. I only signed up month to month…no activation fee either, and two months of unlimited data (which I took full advantage of). They also threw in free CID/VM, bonus minutes and a recurring bill credit when I called customer service in the first week. I was very surprised/impressed with how well they treat their ‘members’, especially because they are owned by Bell (known for sending customers to hell and back). Now that they’ve copied Koodo’s data plans, my bill is going to be even lower from now on.

Don’t think it can’t be done…Fido/Rogers does the least it can do to create the illusion of competitiveness.
