Mobilicity enters into a trial distribution with Metro grocery stores

Mobilicity has stepped into another retail environment, this time testing their luck in a few Metro grocery stores. The new “smart” carrier is currently in trials with 9 locations in Toronto and Ottawa, but hopes to grow into one of their main distribution points.

This is Metro’s first venture into the mobile phone space, most likely to keep up with competitor Loblaws who’s been in it for years, and has recently solidified their commitment by expanding The Mobile Shop brand, which also houses everyone but Mobilicity: Bell, Solo, Virgin, Fido, Virgin, Public Mobile, Wind Mobile, TELUS and PC Mobile.

Anthony Booth, Mobilicity Chief Customer Officer, stated that “Metro fits perfectly into our retail distribution expansion strategy. We look forward to growing our presence at Metro over the holidays and into the New Year as we make it easy for consumers to access the ultimate in unlimited talk, text and data plans while they shop for groceries.”

Mobilicity recently announced that they have “attracted over 250,000 customers”.

    • T1MB1T, i don’t know if it’s you, because on Get Satisfaction, you deny your 8¢/minute “claim” about Rogers. It could be you or a fake.

Honestly, around where i live, there’s only one Metro. There’s three Loblaw-affiliated stores, all of which offer WIND Mobile handsets. In fact, i’ve purchased my first WIND phone at a Loblaws. In another neighbourhood, there is a Loblaws and Metro located so close to each other. It won’t really affect which mobile provider i choose.

i think it’s fair that WIND gets one grocery chain while Mobilicity (or “Metrolicity”, if you will) gets another. Both chains carry to different clientèle: Metro gives Air Miles, Loblaws does not. But you may pay more money just to get Air Miles.

Overall, i’ll only go to a specific grocery store if they have a deal that no other store has, especially for mobile phones. This is exciting news. i suspect a bonus Air Miles payout when one purchases Mobilicity products or services. Yay! :D

  6. “The Mobile Shop brand […] houses […] Solo.” ~ Syrup

i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again:
THERE ARE NO MORE THIRD-PARTY SOLO MOBILE RETAILERS!

Has anyone been to The Source? i’ve talked to multiple staff there, and Solo stock was shipped back to Bell! Signs and dummy phones were torn down! Ditto for Glentel! Walmart too! Zellers as well! NOT ONE third-party Solo Mobile dealer left!

Even if you see Solo branding on display, it’s nothing more than a fluke. Someone didn’t do their job right. Solo sections of stores will be replaced by other brands. If anything, Solo is a SOre LOser that gave up because of Virgin and other brands.

What about Bell stores themselves? Good luck finding anything about Solo. Any Solo devices there are simply for the sake of replacing customers’ older devices and/or “upgrading” them. In one word: grandfathering. The few stores that display Solo have it merged with Bell branding and design. Bell doesn’t want you to save money with a prepaid phone. They want postpaid subscriptions on its premium, well-known Bell and Virgin brands.

Overall, i’m simply tired of seeing the same mistakes again. People presume that Solo is still going strong, when it is not at all. Syrup has failed to adequately report on Solo Mobile’s downfall, including the end of its retail presence. We hear about provincial carriers all the time. Why not hear about what’s happening with Solo?

  7. I just wish any one of those would come to Quebec. Anyone knows why Mobilicity and Wind are not in Quebec? There are more METRO’s in Quebec and Loblaws.

    • Videotron won the auction in Quebec for AWS frequency. That’s why you don’t see Wind or Mobilicity there since they aren’t allowed.
