HP making webOS open source, will bring a “new generation of applications and devices”

Here’s the news that will hopefully make HP rise it’s market share in the samrtphone/tablet space. The company has decided to go the route of Android and make its smooth webOS platform open source. While there are currently no manufacturers lined up, nor devices planned, HP stated in a press release that “developers and customers are invited to provide input and suggestions” of how to further advance the webOS platform.

Meg Whitman, HP president and CEO said “webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable. By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”

HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source

HP to Enable Creativity of the Community to Accelerate the Next-Generation Web-Centric Platform

PALO ALTO, CA–(Marketwire – Dec 9, 2011) – HP (NYSE: HPQ) today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.

HP plans to continue to be active in the development and support of webOS. By combining the innovative webOS platform with the development power of the open source community, there is the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices.

webOS offers a number of benefits to the entire ecosystem of web applications. For developers, applications can be easily built using standard web technologies. In addition, its single integrated stack offers multiplatform portability. For device manufacturers, it provides a single web-centric platform to run across multiple devices. As a result, the end user benefits from a fast, immersive user experience.

“webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”

HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace.

HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles:

The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform

HP will be an active participant and investor in the project

Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation

Software will be provided as a pure open source project

HP also will contribute ENYO, the application framework for webOS, to the community in the near future along with a plan for the remaining components of the user space.

Beginning today, developers and customers are invited to provide input and suggestions at http://developer.palm.com/blog/.

If something deserver to die, then let it be.

  • Sean

Hopefully by making it open source people will use it for their own means and enable it to still live.

  • Len

it will only work if HP continues to support it. And just because its open source doesnt mean they it will survive.

Andriod would not have lasted so long if google did not pump so much into it. from 1.6 to 4.0 google has put a lot of time and money to make the OS work.

I dobut HP will be so nice

    • Tom

      Agreed.

webOS is great, but then so is Meego which has been open source all along (it was originally Maemo). That alone is not enough.

These days it takes a great OS, a great ecosystem, and unwavering corporate support for a mobile OS to have a chance.

It is unfortunate, but it appears that iOS, Android, and probably WP7 will be the only major players. It makes me sad, but not even RIM has all the ingredients for success now.

  • Adam

I think this is a clever move from HP and it will be a success!

  • Rich

Sounds like a great idea! I like it a lot.

  • TheTigerTek

    Wow…Great move HP!!

  • MikeMike

    There’s a Toronto Subway app?

  • ToniCipriani

If open sourcing webOS means xda-developers will start slapping it on pretty much everything, I’m all for it. That’s what webOS needed in the first place: hardware.

  • bestjsg

I love webos and the only reason i have installed Android on my touchpad is because of Netflix and my Bakery Story…

  • Derek

I loved my Pre, and Web OS. I have used webOS, Android and iOS, my first choice would be webOS (assuming they continued to develop it). Sadly, I still dont think its going to survive with out HP backing any hardware to host it.
Palm is just a sad story.

Im running a Nexus S right now and will not be leaving Android in the foreseeable future.

  • Nick

Can’t wait for CyanogenMOD to merge the best of Android and WebOS into one ROM :D

  • Andrew

Mark my words, HTC will be making a webOS device by mid 2012. This is all part of that.

  • Alex Perrier

    Dual boot! :D

  • Frank

I thought webos was dead already?? They Hp cancel the death of webos did I miss something here?

  • bong_sniffer

Absolutely brilliant…it was the only move to keep the OS alive..

  • D Dan

Without hesitation, I would buy a WebOS phone with 2012 hardware.

    • schultzter

That’s the problem though: what hardware is going to run webOS? Is HP thinking all those people out there buying iPhones and Android phones are just crossing their fingers and hoping CyanogenMOD is going to port webOS to their phone?!

Maybe now that the Playbook is rooted there will be a CyanogenMOD of webOS for Playbook – that would make sense! Then QNX could go back to running nuclear power plants and subway systems instead of overpriced toys!

  • Mattprime86

    Samrtphone?

  • schultzter

Ok, really?! The “open source” community is not a dumping ground for the closed-source projects that failed!

WebOS is a smart phone platform! That means with-in two or three (or less) years people’s contracts will be up for renewal and they’ll be able to get the latest, wowiest smart phone for almost nothing.

There’s no mission critical application running on webOS that would motivate any one to take up serious maintenance and enhancement of webOS!

Sure, some enthusiastic hackers somewhere will probably find the time to add some cool features, or port it to some esoteric platform.

If HP really wanted to contribute they would license the related patents royalty free to the open source community. I didn’t see any mention of that in their press release!

  • Yaguang

+1 on HP needing to actively support WebOS in order for it to stay alive.

  • InfinitiGuy

If you can’t sell it, give it away.

    • ToniCipriani

Then the same can be said about Android, no?
