Apple could produce two million iPhone 3GS’ this quarter

According to DigiTimes, Apple is still producing the over two-year-old iPhone 3GS in massive quantities — upwards of two million this quarter and 1.5m the next — as demand is still fairly high for the now entry-level smartphone.

If you will recall, the iPhone 3GS was released in June 2009 and quickly became one of the most popular devices of all time. While maintaining the aesthetic and screen resolution of its predecessor, the iPhone 3G, it significantly boosted processing speed, doubled the RAM and improved the camera. As the device was superseded by the iPhone 4 and now 4S, its price has been reduced to $0 on a 3-year term in most cases, and is a huge seller in developing markets such as Asia.

In contrast, the iPhone 4S is expected to sell 30 million devices worldwide in December, which will likely be the best month ever for an iPhone. Demand is still extremely high in Canada and abroad, though the supply issues that cropped up after the iPhone 4 was released in July 2010 have not been repeated.

So, if you ever thought that once Apple introduces a new iPhone it just tosses out the old one, you’re bettering on the wrong horse. The iPhone 3GS is offered in 8GB versions in most markets.
