  1. There should be a law that when these guys dropping the cost of phone on 3 year term, the no term, 1 year and 2 year term must also must be reduced by the same % point.

  2. This site really needs to stop advertising on-contract price drops.

    I really dont think ANY user (particularly around here) waits for its favorite phone to get a on-contract price cut to actually get it;

Doing so is only free publicity for the carriers/stores. Doesnt help anyone.

  3. Well not everyone can afford to spend $700 so a price drop of a phone from 100/150 to like almost free is a big deal

  4. Paying (36×50)+150= 1950$ or (36×50)+0.01= 1800.01$ is really not that much of a deal.

  6. Its more like…
    Paying (36×70+)+150= 2670$

I don’t know a single person on rogers that pay $50 or less a month, it’s unheard of. All my friends who chose to or is forced to be with rogers pay like $70 – $110 a month, I don’t know how they do it!

    • Seems to me that this price drop is indicative that a new phone is coming out soon. The last time Rogers dropped the infuse and captivate down to a penny, a week or so later, they introduced the Motorola Razr. At least they’re offering penny phones; too bad the price plans are so expensive to the regular canucks.

  7. I get no one caring about new customer pricing, but this should also apply to upgrades (unlike price drops at Future Shop & Best Buy), which I’m sure many people are interested in.

  8. Well if someone’s going to be using the services anyways you might as well get the phone on a deal.

  9. I don’t understand Rogers. How do they have any customers? Why don’t they feel compelled to offer better plans?

Everything seems three times as expensive as the cheap brands, and 50% more expensive than Bell.

They are offering an unlimited Quebec calling plan for 62$ – that’s ridiculous, how can that even be considered a deal?!

    • Looks like Rogers is focused on acquiring new customers with their ‘free’ phone offers and forget (screw) their loyal existing customers!! S2 LTE is currently free, plus a $100 gift card at BB and FS, (for new customers), but as an upgrade, I have to pay min. $180 plus $35 admin fee (another joke), plus taxes!!! My contract is about to run out so once it does, it’s see you NEVER again Rogers! Thanks for neglecting me, your poor service, and your attitude towards existing paying customers! I’ll be checking out Mobilicity and Wind instead!!! Good riddens!!!

  12. I cannot wait for the S2 LTE to drop down as well….. I’ll be picking that baby up right away!
And before all of the 3-year contract haters start commenting, 1) NO I do not have an extra $650 laying around for a new phone and 2) why not? I’ve had the same phone & number now for almost 7 years with Rogers…. may as well continue!

  14. I don’t understand the problem with a 3 year contract. How do you save $549.98 (outright price of phone + $0.01) over 3 years by not getting a contract? To make up that price difference, you need to get the exact same plan for $15.27 less per month. Maybe I’m just ignorant, but I don’t see that happening. Can someone explain this to me?

    • @clseea You’re correct that in Canada you don’t save any money by buying your phone outright if you’re sticking with the same carrier for three years. Some carriers in other countries do provide discounted service if you don’t get a subsidized phone (e.g., T-Mobile in the USA) which is a great idea, though the Big 3 would never be willing to sacrifice $15 a month when they can just as easily make people pay!

However, buying a phone outright does provide peace of mind for some people since they are free to switch carriers and plans every month if they so desire.

    • There are situations where it makes sense to buy outright rather than signing a 3 year contract:

      1) People who broke or lost their phone 15 months into their 36 month contract

      2) People who are only in the country for a year or 2 (or less, like exchange students)

      3) People buying Pentaband phones to use on Wind/Mobilicity

      4) People who want voice plans only at $25 a month vs $50-$60 a month because they have Wifi at home/school/work but would still like to be able to check their email and browse on one device

      5) People using prepaid data plans with 30 cent per minute calling because they never use the phone for calling other than emergencies

If you don’t fit in any of the above, that’s fine, then in that case a 3 year contract at $50-$60 a month may work for you. For the rest of us, it doesn’t.

  15. But this special is for $550 off the regular price.
Cancelling a contract is, at most, $500.
So if you’re already a Rogers customer, buying this phone then cancelling the contract is $50 cheaper than buying it outright.

    • @ Clseea

Going with the Big 3 with a discounted phone on a 3 year term, you will get a plan most likely 200day time minutes, unlimited night / weekend at 9, extra cost for text message (send or receive) and 1GB of data. This plan here can cost you at least $60 + GRRF. If you want text message package and that will be another $8, which comes to $68 + GRRF.

Where as going with Koodo, $35 City Koodo, unlimited minutes, unlimited text messages, data is optional but just say you use 1GB, which is $20. This plan will costs you $55. A $13 + GRRF saving = about $15.50. If you$ 15.5 * 36 = $558 of saving over 3 years. This is good enough for a new phone.

A lot of people who are using those 3 year plan will always go over their minute allowance. Also, Koodo is optional with Koodo, meaning that data can cost as little as $5 if I barely use it.

When you are on a contract, you don’t have the bargaining power! Whereas if you are contract free, the big 3 are begging for your business.

  16. @ clseea: Depending on your usage, it’s quite possible to come out ahead by buying a phone outright and using a provider like Koodo. The plan I have with Koodo costs significantly less than it would with Rogers, Bell or Telus, and I can cancel or change my plan at any time without penalty.

    • What is “significantly less”?
I understand the freedom of being able to cancel or switch from carrier to carrier, but I’m not sure about the cost savings. I’ve priced things out with all the carriers, and I can’t really see significant savings with contracts vs. no contracts + price of phone. I’m sure there are some outliers though.
The only major way I’ve been able to save over the years is by going straight to the cancellation department. They’ll always move on plan pricing or throw in extras at no cost.

  17. 3 YEARS PLAN IS GOOD FOR PEOPLE THAT THEY DON’T HAVE CASH TO BUY THE PHONE FOR FULL PRICE 500 OR 600 + TAX, SO YOU ARE GETTING A SERVICE AND A PHONE AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS GOOD FOR ME, HOWEVER THE PRICE OF THE PLAN IS EXPENSIVE THIS IS THE POINT 500 MG DATA +200 MIN MINIMUM IS $50.00++

  18. Can’t believe this..people here are complaining about 1 PENNY for a phone that cost almost $650!!! You can find a penny just walking down the sidewalk outside of the Eaton Centre!! Better yet, give me your address and I will send you a penny i the mail. I would rather pay $60.00 for a cell phone plan that actually provides coverage EVERYWHERE I go!

I used Mobi for 2 months and had to leave cause I could only use my phone when I stood near an open window!! Not everyone works or lives near a cellphone tower!!!

  19. @crimsona

Thanks, those points make sense. It seemed like people were either morally opposed to contracts, or had some sneaky master plan on how to get super cheap non contract rates. I’ve always been able to negotiate contracts, so buying a phone outright never made sense to me. I’ve looked into WIND and Mobilicity, but it seems their coverage is pretty suspect
