These days this is honestly as entry level as it comes. Thankfully the price is set accordingly. Fido has made room online and on their store shelves for the Samsung C414 – a flip phone with big keys and a 2MP camera. The cost: $20 on a 2-year, or $75 outright.

How is this possibly news? I cant imagine the type of people who read this site would be the type of people who would buy (or even care about) this phone.

Nobody can really complain about such a phone. I bet it makes calls and sends texts without any problems. Plus nobody can deny that the battery life on a basic phone is significantly better than most smartphones these days.

What about nothing for no fixed length contract for a GALAXY ACE with Koodo ?
Having trouble with competition Fido ?

What a deal! Save $55 if you sign a two year contract! i bet the cancellation fee outside of Québec will be WAY bigger than $55! :O :@

@ Howitzer. Not a fan of this phone but there is no such thing as $0 phone with no contract. Koodo and the rest of gang fool you with their no term tab offer. It will take more than 4 years to clear the tab when you get a 30$ plan. At least fido gives you tons of subsidy for 2yr term. You also get fido dollars and can trade your used phone. No one gives you full smartphone subsidy and unlimited plan like fido. I think they have the best value in market, They are just modest and dont shout as loud as others. No wonder their icon is dogs. I love my fido

Both Koodo and Fido offer, or offered, $0 phones with no tab or contract:
* Fido: Take say the C1 or C414. They cost $50 or $75, but the price gets lowered by $50 if you activate on a prepaid monthly plan and/or trade in a used cell phone. That’s up to $100 in rebates, for cheap GSM/HSPA+ phones to begin with. Not too bad.
* Koodo: There was a deal for a free INQ Chat 3G with a $0 Tab. It required a phone to be traded in and/or an activation on Friday. Cancel Koodo, and there is no cancellation fee whatsoever. Only pay for your monthly plan.
Neither make much money on the product. They rip off customers with their overpriced service.

TELUS and WIND charge $25 less for the same phone.
What a greedy, gourmand dog! Darn Fido! :O

Sorry, forgot to mention Mobilicity. $50 too, at Walmart, comes with a free month of the regular $25 plan. Activate this year, get 50% off their plans after the free month is used up.
WIND has a sweet service discount offer as well.
The WIND/Mobilicity version is AWS/T-Mobile, while the TELUS version is Big 3/AT&T. Both will work on Fido GSM, while AT&T will work on Fido HSPA+.

Were this a pentaband device like the Galaxy Nexus or HTC Amaze then we’d be on to something, I think — at least for a cheap travel phone…

What the hell is wrong with you guys? Can we have one post without anyone complaining? With all you guys harping about dreaming of a world with no contracts, you think you’d be happy. You all want 700$ phones, but you don’t want to pay for them… then you want the fastest network with seamless coverage, in one of the largest countries in the world with the least amount of wireless users. Time to wake up and understand why the business is this way, and stop thinking that it’s some huge conspiracy out to get you. If you are this upset with wireless services in Canada, I wonder what you are doing to the fuel companies. You guys aren’t anti-anything. You’re just plain miserable.
I think it’s great of Fido to provide options for those who’d be interested in something like this.
For the rest of you…suck it up!

James does bring up some valid points. Take a few minutes to look at the industry objectively; look at the population and the size of our country versus others. Be thankful that we have new competition and that prices are starting to get competitive.
Enjoy what you have now and make the best of it because when you’re gone…your cell phone won’t be coming with you.

THANK YOU for that…I don’t understand people. On top of that, they are complaining about spending $20..really??? $20?? People spend more than that a day on useless stuff such as cigarettes and alcohol. Unbelievable!

$25 that can go towards a good cause in need. Last time i checked, Rogers wasn’t “a good cause in need.”

A camera? In my phone? What is this world coming to with all these new-fangled gadgets getting mixed up with each other. Back in my day, a phone did exactly 2 things. It made calls, and it recieved calls. (and we walked through the snow to get to school, uphill, both ways)
You kids and your toys.

There’s up to $100 in rebates if you:
* activate on a prepaid monthly plan, and
* trade in any old cell phone
So the phone essentially becomes free. It’s just a hassle to get all these rebates to work. :S

Oh for christs sake Fido.
I know people here are against complaining, but you would too if you were on Fido. Look at the phones available…
Im going to switch to either Telus or Bell. I hope Fido realizes they’re just driving people away…

why not buy your own unlocked phone and use it on fido? It would be great if fido did have more reliable GOOD entry phones, the nokia C1 is ok but not exactly big wow.
Give a me a phone with decent battery, reception, made well (not cheap plastic), etc. I like Sony ericson and Nokia, but that’s me and GREATLY depends on the phone model.
not everyone wants/NEEDS a bloody touch screen pda or blackberry.
I just want to make sure I get my phone calls and texts on a reliable network for work and occasional emergency call, that’s what I pay for, not to keep up with what everyone else has.

This is a great phone for the elderly. The numbers are nice and large, and it comes with a basic camera to take pictures of kids and grand kids. The big screen on it is preferable to most of the other low end phones we carry that are comparable, i.e. Nokia 2720
If you’re shopping around for a phone for the G-Parents, or parents, this could be just the ticket!

Thanks for all the comments guys. You sound like a bunch of i****s. Feeling superior because you have some smartphone you do not really need, getting lousy service. Well aren’t you special. Much better than a nice long list of books you have read, or a degree from a decent school.
A friend recently switched from Rogers to one of the “competitive” companies, getting a smartphone with unlimited data, calls and text for one year, for about 30 dollars. Problem is that the service sucks — his phone drops out after every ten minutes, the coverage is bad, and once this deal is over he is going to pay through the nose. After hearing of his experience, and dealing with calls from him that were nothing but breakups, interference and drops, I decided to stick with Fido, which I have been with for almost 15 years — have given me great coverage, and very decent call quality — and to just buy this phone.
Happy calling suckers.
