RIM rumoured to launch five BBX devices in 2012: London, Lisbon, Milan, Nevada, Black Forest

2012 could become a very interesting year for RIM, hopefully better than this fluctuating year has been. BBX powered smartphones will be what RIM is all about in 2012. We’ve already seen a picture of the sleek looking BlackBerry “London” appear, this was formally called the “Colt” , and apparently this could launch in March.

Back in April, RIM co-Ceo Jim Balsille stated that “we absolutely have a whole next generation of smartphones”. Maybe he was speaking about these new leaked BBX codenames that CrackBerry has revealed: “London,” “Lisbon,” “Milan,” “Nevada,” and “Black Forest.” The Milan has an internal code number of R071 and could be a variant of the “London”, possibly heading to Rogers (or really any Canadian carrier these days). There are no specific detail for the Lisbon yet, but early rumours are that it might be a slider of some sort. The BBX-powered “Nevada” brings back the familiar BlackBerry styling with a full QWERTY keyboard, and could look like the Bold 9900, but taller with a rumoured release around the November time frame.

A couple months ago, after speculation that RIM was going to end production of the PlayBook, RIM quickly issued a press release stating the claim was false and that they remain “highly committed to the tablet market”. So, the final code name in the leaked report shows a BBX product called the BlackBerry “Forest”. This is rumoured to be a 10-inch PlayBook with a slight re-design that could have edgier corners – not so smooth an generic looking like the 7-inch PlayBook.

Five BBX devices is a solid start to putting RIM back on track, hopefully further details – specifically specs – and pictures surface. This would be a nice gift to everyone to end the year.

  1. If they can release something amazing fast, it will definitely at least stem the loss of market shares. I for one wishes them luck in maintaining as a 3rd option aside from the other 2 behemoths (and perhaps WP7).

  2. RIMM Stock dropped 10% yesterday to just under $17,expect:
-20% drop after Dec 15th Q3 earnings release to about $14.
-Barrage of rumors (Damage control) about new products

    This article doesn’t say anything:
Mentions that the LOndon, which was going to be released in September, now COULD be released in March.

Then uses a Balsillie quote from APRIL 2011! when he said that BBX devices were around the corner, 8 months later no email for the playbook, BBX comes end of Q1 2012 and Last Official LONDON statement is for Q3 2012. Analyst investors and shareholders are sick of overpromises and underdeliveries. The stock price shows it. They will be lucky if they make it to end of January above $10 living off rumours! $99 playbook is around the corner.

    • I remember in 2008 when the recession came and everyone thought their bullish financial forecast was to high, but that RIM had a perfect track record of beating forecasts.

Now that the market is hyperturbulent thanks to Android, noone gives RIM any credit.

    • Colt was shown in August and at that point, it was a working prototype. London got press in October and I’m sure it too was a working prototype. They are building these phones.

The big things in their way are BBX security, carrier approvals etc. I think as far as BBX phones are concerned, that they are right now trying to make them as perfect as possible rather than making large structural changes.

PlayBook OS2.0 was obviously pushed back to February 17 so to time itself with a BBX phone announcement. They want the software and hardware to merge perfectly, and doing a prelaunch of 2.0 in November was not a great idea. You’ll see that in February.

  4. All we hear are rumors… Start talking concrete dates, start releasing good devices and I’ll pay attention.

I really doubt they will release anything worthwhile however. I’m sure we’ll have a ton of “Support Canadian Business” comments here soon enough, but that is a complete load of crap. I’ll start supporting them when they put forth something innovative and worth my time.

    • Seldom do comments come any dumber. Why the hell would they purposefully make a tablet running their own software, just so you could buy it and run android? They might as well make android out of the box in that case. If you want an android tablet, go buy a damn android tablet.

    • Oh my god.

The Playbook probably costs a bit of $200. At $199 right now, it is affordable.

I don’t get why people always want companies to do the Apple thing. Slow releases means less options, less competition, and worse for the consumer. I don’t want a 3.5 inch glass brick as my only option, thank you very much.

Using Android takes the destiny of their own devices out of their hands. It is currently plaguing HTC from breaking outside of a OEM, and is also a reason why Samsung keeps exploring internal OS options. There’s also a reason why Nokia continues to maintain Symbian. I am an Android user, but I can tell how they can’t exactly do their own thing, especially considering frequently the software side is where the money flows.

RIM is right to try to get their own OS as a viable option.

    • Anyone who uses QNX knows it is a fine OS, and in most respects, the best. The problem was with apps and apparently email. I think the email thing was was overplayed to a crowd of people who don’t know any better, as gmail and hotmail have web apps that display perfectly on the PlayBook and load automatically. Also, I don’t know why anyone who doesn’t own a BlackBerry that is buying a PlayBook in its first year of launch – typically that is for fans only – in which case you get Bridge which is a great email app.

    • BBM and email are not history.

Security will be huge in the future as mobile phones become more like our PC’s – carrying all our confidential records (ie. legal, health, etc) and all our social media.

Wait until Android gets hacked internationally or a virus spreads. You tell me what RIM stock is worth then.

These events you can’t predict when, but their is definitely a possibility of that happening given how weak its security is and the sheer size of its user base – well worth writing a virus for.

  11. All they need is one phone, one tablet. With a uniform user experience, and the features people expect. The playbook was a dud because of the missing software. And they still haven’t managed to ship it.

  12. Pahech, Nokia is only keeping Symbian for entry level devices in certain foreign markets. Windows Phone is now Nokia’s “primary smartphone strategy”. (direct quote from Stephon Elop, CEO of Nokia)

  14. Hopefully they release a new product that is complete. Nothing like the tablet missing email or contacts. Get real.
