Koodo’s new Data Saver add-ons officially launches Monday, so will an increase in Voicemail and Call display

A month ago we posted news that Koodo Mobile was going to release new Data Saver add-on rates. These will be available tomorrow (Monday, November 28th) and the monthly costs and data ranges are listed above in the brochure – yesterday Virgin matched these rates with their new data flex plans. In addition to the changes in data rates, Koodo will also be slightly increasing both the call display and voicemail add-on to $7/month, up $1.

(Thanks tipster!)

  1. Ummm raising prices in the face of competition… great idea… how about you include them in the plan like most carriers in the world

  2. Features that are costing a company pennies (if even that), and, in reality, should be free and always included with any of their plans, add up to $14/month for the subscriber.

    Yup, this seems about right…

    • Take a closer look at the image, Call display, voice mail and unlimited messaging is a $10 bundle. The increase for the individual features is likely just to entice you to go for the $10 bundle. That $10 bundle is a better value then what most carriers offer.

  3. Voicemail may be costing storage space but how is Caller ID costing even a penny?

Caller ID should be a standard feature for all plans. Period. It should not be a luxury.

  4. Uh. They’re still cheaper than every other provider and if you want both it’s only $10, not $14, and you get unlimited texting.

  5. @Sean, look a little bit higher. Oh yeah that’s right, a little bit more! You see? 10$ –> Voicemail (10msg), call display plus unlimited txt msging. If you see anything that sweet around, let me know! Cauz I don’t think there is :) ..

  6. Gee, looks like they ACTUALLY want people to take all 3 (vm caller id text) for $10. Amazing how you all can only focus on the negative. Koodo actually want you to SAVE. Crazy eh.

  7. There’s next to no carrier loyalty in Canada, it’s really just going from 1 carrier/contract to another with the phone being the only carrot dangled in front of your face.

With the way pricing is, you almost swear the Big 3 are intentionally swapping users around & cashing in on number ports + activation fees.

    • But then if that’s the case, can’t you get around that by switching when they have the collective “no activation fee” promos?

  9. Don’t forget that the data flex plan now has increased limits for $15 (300mb from 200mb) $20 (1GB from 300MB) and $30 (3GB from 1GB).

I use the data flex plan w/ Koodo because most months I’m within the $10 bracket. (Work from home, wifi instead of 3G etc)

  10. Not sure what to think about this….. I have been on the data saver plan for 2 months now…. Not new that’s for sure. And looking at the brochure I received from Koodo when I signed up 2 months ago….. The call display and voice mail were that price already

    • The point is, these carriers are taking down the price of one item and then get you back the other way around. In the end, this is not a benefit to the customer.

Sure, it costs a lot to build and keep towers. But looking at the big three fat profit, there is no need to charge caller ID.

    • But how many times over do they have to charge to cover those expenses? Texting, LD, Caller ID all these things cost the carriers little to nothing yet, each one is insanely profit-inflated. At some point, the “we build towers you know” excuse has to be exhausted.

  12. Caller ID data is included in the packets of information your phone receives from the tower when you get a call. It actually costs them the one-time effort to turn it OFF. So yeah, your argument about towers and stuff is BS. it’d be like an apartment owner charging you for sunlight coming through your window. OK, the window cost money, but the sunlight is there anyway.

Bad move, Koodo. I’m sticking with them because I got grandfathered to an awesome $35/month plan, but they’ve been moving away from their budget roots.

  14. Coming from a so called “third world” country two years ago, I was shocked to see that cell phone companies were miles behind the companies of my country. But I must say a lot has changed in the last two years than for example the two years before that. Canadian companies are getting there, just not fast enough. I feel that canadians are just too nice a people. If they were a bit more demanding then change would have happened a lot faster. In my country where there were no contracts when the main company citycell upped rates back in 2006, everyone switched and within one year they went from the first to the fourth biggest provider. The big 3 needs to experience something like that.

  15. Take a step back and look at the big picture here. $45 for unlimited talk nation wide (no zones), $10 for unlimited text, CD and voicemail, and $30 for 3 gb of data. That’s an $85 for a reasonably unlimited plan on a REAL network without an access fee or a contract. That beats any of the big 4 in the states! People will always find something to b***h about.

  16. Let me do a comparison for a person who doesn’t stay in one zone, THIS IS NON PROMO PRICING COMPARISON. Wind mobile $45 Canada wide, plus $10 data plus $10 tethering. $65 with wind plus Ontario taxes $73.45 , Now koodo or Virgin mobile, $45-50, plus $10 cid,vm unl text. $30 max flex data, $85-90 plus taxes.

Now koodo, virgin you can use Canada wide. Lets try that with wind, 500 out of zone minutes with wind $125,
200 texts(could be more)=$30 and lets say 100 MB of data(could be more) $400. So $555+65 equals $620 plus taxes $700.60 or $100 a month, I wonder which one is cheaper?

    • If you use your phone out-of-zone a lot, you shouldn’t be with the new entrants anyway. Same goes with Chatr (“zoned” business model) or the “zoned” plans offered by the other Big 3 companies (CityFido, Solo’s prepaid zoned unlimited plans, Telus Prepaid GTA unlimited). Though with The Big Three brands, there are no roaming fees for texting or data. Only calls. So if you don’t talk much out-of-zone but you text and use data, you don’t have to worry about roaming fees.

Also you don’t need the tethering add-on ($10) with WIND to actually use tethering. I don’t have that add-on on my WIND account and I pulled 4 GB+ data tethering in one month and about 2-3 GB more the next month tethering. WIND’s $10 unlimited data plan gives you at least 5 GB/month of unthrottled data. After 5 GB, WIND reserves the right to throttle you to 256 kbps (32 KB/s). The tethering add-on basically just ups your unthrottled bandwidth cap to 10 GB/month. That’s the only thing you need it for. chances are if you need more than 5 GB data, you are tethering. That’s why it’s called the tethering add-on. And honestly who actually bothers to get WIND’s Canada-wide at $45 anyway? Pretty much everyone who signs up with WIND is on one promo or another. WIND and Mobilicity constantly come out with promos. I’m on the $29 Super Smart promo. Subs with more seniority are on the Irresistible 35, Holiday Miracle Plan 40, Unstoppable 45, All In the Family Plan, etc. No one goes on the non-promo $45 Genius (Canada-Wide) plan. No one. WIND’s ARPU is like $27-29/month. WIND customers are cheap skates. As for your math, why would anyone be that stupid to use 100 MB out-of-zone at $1/MB (if you get WIND’s roaming add-on for $10/month, it’s $1/MB)? If you want to use that much data in a month outside of zones, WIND and Mobilicity are not for you.

  17. I want voicemail too anyway so doesn’t really make a difference to me. However, I think it’s BS that it’s standard in the Canadian telecom industry to nickel and dime people on crap like caller ID and voicemail. Like it was said before on here, it costs more money to the carrier to turn caller ID OFF. And voicemail costs next to nothing to provide. Almost everyone wants caller ID and a lot of people want voicemail. So it makes business sense to gouge you on these things. Still BS though.

Other issues I have with the Canadian wireless industry in general: charging you for nation-wide long-distance (no such thing in the US, UK and much of the world), charging you for incoming calls (this is not the international standard), three-year contracts. WIND haven’t done anything revolutionary with their Windtab+. It’s still essentially a 3 year contract. You have to pay off the large remaining balance on your phone if you don’t stick with them for 3 years. Meanwhile in the US and UK, your phone gets paid off if you stick with the company for 2 years. Three year contracts are illegal in the UK and two year contracts in Canada give you pitiful savings (like $100 off on the phone. Whereas a 3 year can give you $500 off or even bring the price down to $0 during a promo).

  18. Agree with droidacolyte

Having coming from the UK, was shocked at the raping Canucks get by cell carriers.
People need to kick up some serious fuss or this crap will never change.

Pitiful minutes..long distance..3 year jail terms..paying for incoming.. extortionate plans that don’t include the simplest of things like voicemail or call display….really?! F**king call display.

If the industry wasn’t governed by the same thieving cocks that own the companies, this would be illegal.

There is something to be said for foreign competition…
I would rather pay a yank for a fair unlimited plan than be shafted by a Canadian who has based his business model on screwing his own countryfolk.

Roll on one of the big Americans etc paying some hobo off te street to beat the minimum Canadian ownership regulations and then watching as millions of people abandon their country’s own carriers.

    Viva la revolution…or something

  22. For people who do a lot of voice and long distance Koodo has the best deal going. Our company rode out our 3year Telus contract and now we are switching phones to Koodo, same network, but our bills are going way down. Even the Tab is helpful compared to the old style 3 year contract (although the contract terms have gotten better in recent years)

Koodo also has a pretty solid offering of phones

  24. You know why these companies charge for things like Caller ID? Because people are willing to PAY for them. Why give something away for free when people are willing to pay for them? Cost of offering the service is irrelevant. It’s about maximizing the amount of revenue. This is what every company is supposed to do to the benefit of their shareholders. (Yes, even the new entrants have this aim as well.)

It’s called capitalism people. Charge what people are willing to pay. Don’t want to pay for it? Don’t have the service. It’s your choice. Get over it.

  25. This just proves that people can only focus on negatives instead of positives. If you’re unhappy with paying an extra $1 a month then start your own wireless carrier. It’s simple business, high barriers to entry results in less competition which means price fixing.

The major plus is that the new data flex is a step in the right direction for people who don’t want to lock themselves into a 3 year. Ideally if Koodo can get some decent Android devices this new data flex can greatly benefit them and their current and future consumers.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely agree that Call ID & Voice Mail (and to a certain extent, unlimited texting) should be free. But complaining about paying an extra $1/month (less than $0.03 a day) is just childish at best.

But for now, demand is high and supply is low so we really have very little options as consumers. Plus…who gets just Call ID and Voicemail alone when you can bundle the 2 + unlimited text (and BBM) for $10?

I would think people would be more upset about 3 year terms still being legal in Canada than a $1 increase in voice mail and call display.

  28. I’m happy to see the new Data Saver rates.

As of today, the new data rates are posted on Koodo’s site, but the CID and VM are still showing as $6 each. Maybe it’s a mistake, or maybe Koodo decided to keep them at the lower rates.

However, I’m not happy about the higher overage rate (40 cents/min instead of 35 cents/min) and the higher voice roaming rate in the States ($1.40/min instead of $1.35/min). These changes are sneaky and of course weren’t mentioned in the email they sent to customers last week to let them know about the forthcoming data rates.

  29. DO NOT USE KOODO. What koodo has done to me: 1. Very nice at first,we made several long distance calls BETWEEN THE TWO PHONES and were never charged. 2.I ordered 2 phones for my 2 kids, was never able to hook them up because service was never available and after waiting for over an hour for a customer service representative she didnt know what to do.3 I missed a payment, they cut me off,I paid and set up pre-pay with my credit card, they activated my phone at no charge. 4. I recieved a text that all calls between family members were free including long distance. 5.This year at no time did I recieve any form of communication that you had to sign up for free long distance or roaming charges.Their commercial completely gives people the impression that only new customers have to sign up and considering the text I recieved and previously not being charged. I thought it was a non-issue. 6. They took advantage of my credit card and charged over 1,600.00 for 2 months worth of calls between my two cell phones.Credible companies will call you to inform you that you are being charged. 7.They refused to speak to the BBB. They have since charged me 25$ just to talk to their i****s and get no where, and have charged a 60$ recconection charge twice without my consent.KOODO IS A SCAM

  30. @Redup getting lawyer. You do realize it breaches customer rules and regulations to change something on a customers plan without telling them? Just cause a new plan/feature is out, you have to be INCREDIBLEY naive to assume your account would automatically switch to it. Good luck in court. You’re wasting you’re time and money.
