Virgin changes up “commitment free” data flex plans (gives more data)

Virgin released their new data flex plan a couple weeks back and with wireless competition being so heated – changes have already occurred. Of course, beating matching their competition Koodo Mobile, Virgin has upped the amount of data for the “commitment free data plans”, now giving customers the following ranges without increases the associated rates (see old flex rates here):

- 0MB up to 25MB is $5/month
- up to 100MB is $10/month
- up to 300MB is $15/month
- up to 1GB is $20/month
- up to 3GB is $30/month

Good show – Virgin also says “if this doesn’t make your bells jingle, we’re not sure what will”.
(Thanks tipster!)

    • @Sean Virgin has 6 GB for $30 available if you call them. It’s unlisted, but they’ll give it to you without a contract.

  4. Virgin copies koodo again. You wouldn’t want to actually compete, just mirror the competition

    • Yeah I would prefer that Virgin Mobile do their own thing instead of blatantly copying Koodo. That’s just how it is with our industry though. Monkey see, monkey do. Collusion. At least this change makes Virgin Mobile more relevant. But other than the edgy marketing, they aren’t really doing anything to stand out.

  9. Would I be able to get the 35$ voice and text + this up to 20$ every month for my smartphone plan (it needs to be 50$/month)? Not sure if they require a straight 50$ or if they can always used this commitment-free data thing and just charge me 20$ every month (AT least) to get me up to the required 50$.

    • I think this is automatically slapped on to all voice plans.

Now if only they re-release the $35 plan and put caller ID back in like the old version…

    • @Mike If you are on a Supertab/contract, you can’t jump from a smartphone plan to a talk & text plan without paying a penalty. You’d have to be on month to month or on a dumbphone contract to take advantage of the commitment free data plans.

  10. I don’t understand why people are even suprised that Virgin would do that…why wouldn’t they? That’s not the point of competition.

Besides, what sucks is that these data plans are NOT applicable to smartphones w/ data requirement on a 3 year. Only currently available for Gio/551/Wildfire S

    • Not sure where you heard this, but you can activate Virgin’s new plans and get this commitment free data on any handset or Smartphone (not JUST the Gio/Wildfire)…you just wouldn’t receive the data subsidy since it’s commitment free data. But if you wanted the data subsidy you could just activate on a Combo plan that includes it

  12. Koodo’s website shows their Data Saver (Flex Rate) plan is 500 MB to 1 GB for $30/month. Virgin’s new plan is much better. Virgin Mobile is going in the right direction.

  16. Since 39% of Canadians(recent Ipsos-Reed poll) have BB smartphones, wonder why they are purposely excluded in both Virin & Koodo plans?

  17. I’m assuming its because BB’s compress their data so you don’t burn through as much as with other devices.

    • Nope RIM requires a residual payment from the carrier to enable BIS support. RIM would have to offer the carriers an escalating fee instead of flat rating their fee. Last I heard it was $2.oo minimum for just BBM or $5-$10 for full BIS to BES support of email/Internet features.

  21. I’m new to having data on my smart phone – only been a couple of months since I added it and I intentionally tried to limit how much I use – to see how much ‘the basics’ of using my mobile’s data services would cost me. Basically it’s checking e-mails periodically, Facebook, Twitter and periodic web surfing and video watching, but a conscious intention to control/limit how much I use. I use about 130MB a month.

I look at Virgin including 25MB for $5 and wonder what 25MB is useful for?

  24. Koodo is actually copying virgin, as virgin came out with this plan first to offer members the best options for those not wanting $500+ smartphones on the biggest and most reliable network in canada, also these new data usage points have not been put in effect yet, as I work at the source and still the old data amounts are in play, so should probably research some more to ensure that this information is accurate!!!

  27. so if i am on a 3 yr smartphone plan…started last august…and pay $55 plus tax….including 1gb…and wanted to switch to the $50 unlimited and pay extra for flex data…which based on current usage would add at least $15-20 a mth…for a total of $65-70/mth…i cannot get that?
someone said you must have dedicated data or you cannot switch?
then why did the guy selling me the phone and contract originally say i had to have ‘a $50/mth or over plan’ minimum while under contract…he never specified what ‘kind’ of contract or about data…just that it had to be $50????

so i cant do that? help?

  29. @sharkhark
You technically could get that $50 unlimited and just pay the flex data usage, but since ur on a 3-yr then you’ll have to pay for data cancellation around $200. Cause the 50 unli plan is just considered as a talk and text plan…u get to choose if u wanna use data or not..from what i see from their website, that $55 u have now went up to $60.

  31. I’m on a 3 year contract, but I am not on a Smartphone plan. I have the $25 Talk&Text, plus the $30 6GB Data Plan. I don’t use anywhere near 6GB. Anyone know if they’ll let me switch my Data Plan to the flex plan without penalty?

    • it’s suppose to come with any talk and text plan, so if you cancel the 6G data, you should automatically have this one instead. You should call virgin to make sure though.

    • Dazed, Call Virgin on 611 to tell them. Ask for a credit AND compensation. If you have 500MB and used less, then you should not have been charged. It should not have happened AT ALL so there’s no way to “keep it from happening on a worse scale”.
