Public Mobile prices Android handsets below $170 outright

Wow, not only will Public Mobile be having a sale for their new unlimited talk, text and data plan (cut to $30/month), but they’ll also be putting their upcoming Android devices straight to the sale rack. Public originally said they’ll go to market with the ZTE N762 and the self-branded “Max” at $199 outright, but now they have decided to heavily discounted both of them. The Max will be $169 and the ZTE N762 will be $149. The “Max” is available today and the ZTE is “coming soon”, but will most likely land in December.

More soon here at Public
(Thanks tipster!)

    • Not disregarding that Public Mobile is doing great for being the radar, but how exactly do you know that their 3G is fast without it actually being released yet?

    • Phoneguy works for Public, is severely biased, and have been proven wrong way too many times before. I wouldn’t trust a single word that comes out of his mouth, and neither should you.

  4. BC the owners and managers get to play with them prior to launch…PMs 3G is the same speeds as others carriers HSPA+ bc PM use seperate lines for data and voice so speeds are alot faster :)

    • Same speed as HSPA+ from Bell/Telus? I’m highly doubting that. I’m sure Public Mobile is using CDMA and isn’t the theoretical max roughly 3.6Mbps….

I think your over-hyping it to be quite honest, not saying your lying but I’m not believing you yet.

    • CDMA can only do voice OR data, not both at the same time. So you are clearly wrong.

  5. Putting products up “straight to the sale rack” is blatant consumer deception. It means that the list price was never real – just an invention to allow them to pretend that the product is on sale

That way, when someone walks into their stores they see that the product is on sale when it isn’t really.

I’m sorry to see the new entrants plumbing the same depths as the incumbents.

    • MSRP is as real as it gets. PM is selling these units at cost, or even below cost, thus not making any money off of these handsets. They will be making money from monthly plan fees, though, and that’s fine.

    • A regular or “everyday low price” offered by a store isn’t necessarily the same as a MSRP. For example, Walmart’s products cost a few pennies under the MSRP, while Rogers frequently charges more outright for phones like the LG Optimus One/Phoenix. It’s possible PM inflated the MSRP.

    • The “M” in MSRP stands for “Manufacturer”. PM is not inflating anything.

    • @DeathClown

But there is no MSRP here – the MSRP is just something that Public Mobile invented.

    • you should talk to a fiscal specialist or an accounting professional, I will assume this is purely a financial turnaround for potential lost of revenue on a subsidy of some kind on the phones , not a scam like you are suggesting

  10. So $35 for 6 months and then $45 afterwards. How exactly is this bargain pricing,it’s not exactly like public is fast browsing, For $45 I rather do wind’s offer of $29 for 1 year then $45 afterwards. Or even mobilicity $40 holiday plan unlimited everything FOR LESS.

    • I too am a PM employee and I agree. That is not the kind of attitude the company strives for and if phone guy knew anything about our CEO he would know that he doesn’t support being arrogant and rude to other people, especially potential customers. He would absolutely be fired from my store,we don’t need that kind of attitude to sell phones, the product speaks for itself and the company has always been firm in saying we’re not for everyone.

  18. Mobilicity’s data speeds are s**t asss bad and I along with 2 of my friends quit after only a few months, worse customer service I ever experienced in my life with i****s running the place and all they do is lie. We will try Public Mobile to give them a chance and they definitely can’t be any worse than that crap outfit. Love how some fanbois are even cutting them up now and the complaints keep growing. Fucked up hofoers should stay off this side as they bring enough shame onto themselves and leave us alone. Keep spreading the word folks by going on Facebook and Twitter and tell everyone how bad Mobilicity really is and why Public mobile is winning.

  19. The thing with low-end Androids is that a lot of them are laggy POS. Unbearable lag I don’t expect a low-end Android to play demanding games or to have a good camera/camcorder. But if it can run the apps you need and not lag like a POS, that’s all that matters. I’ve had my laptop for 27 months and it runs just fine. I don’t need a powerhouse desktop. And many people don’t need a powerhouse phone. I strongly suggest you educate yourself on Public Mobile’s return policy and give these phones a thorough test drive if you’re considering Public.

I still think the safe bet is to buy a Samsung Galaxy S II X or HTC Amaze from TELUS outright or get the Galaxy Nexus from Bell outright and then try WIND/Mobilicity. At least if WIND/Mobi don’t work out for you, those phones can work on the Big Three networks. And they are probably the best AWS-compatible Androids on the market right now.

    • Seeing as there’s no contract and no credit check, can’t hurt to try it. And the buyer’s remorse or “Happiness Policy” is return to a service center within 7 days and 30 minutes of usage, with no bruises or water damage. No details as yet on if data will be counted into the policy – probably not.
I for one am pretty excited!

  21. overpriced plans (Wind has $29/month for a full year, mobilicity has $25 plan for LIFE).
mobilicity offers unlimited talk, text, and DATA for $25/month for life. why pay public mobile $45/month for the same thing?

phones are also overpriced considering they’re LOCKED forever to public mobile.

note: i don’t use mobilicity, I use wind… but right now mobilicity has the best plan out there. wind has second best. then maybe fido ;)

  23. I have a new found respect for PMI. They focused on their market segment no stupid flash mob dancers in front of Rogers no dumb condom hand outs “f” mybill or no “D”Bag CEO riding across the country falsifying roaming claims. Just a consistant approach to their business model. Speaks to their Executive Team ex Bell and Rogers who actually know the business.

  25. Boy am I enjoying my new ZTE Android phone, now on sale for $100 from Public Mobile. I love PM! The network is solid and the data speeds are amazing. I had a Blackberry on Rogers and I can honestly say that Public’s 3G is at least as good and I think much faster than Rogers. These phones are well-supported. One thing about PM, they take their time, and then when they do something, they do it right.

Anyone thinking of the ZTE Android offering would be very happy with the phone, the network, and the customer service. i would highly recommend the phone and Public Mobile in general.
