Fido cuts Canadian Unlimited Add-on by 50%, now $10 per month

Quick add-on update for those who are with or plan to join Fido. To compete with all the other sub-brands such as Koodo and Virgin, Fido has slashed the cost of their Unlimited Canadian add-on by 50%, now costing $10/month for the unlimited Canadian calling. It states that it’s available on all Fido plans, but the fine print states that it’s available to CityFido customers.

  1. Its the same BS with the new Virgin nation wide calling. I have been with virgin for 7 years and I called them to inquire about the said nation wide calling only to find out that its for new activations only. One word to that BAALLLLSSSSS!

  2. WOOF! BAD FIDO!

$10/month is a rip off when my Fido friends basically get it for free. Anywhere in Canada,, not just the CityFido zones!

Justin, it annoys me that they call themselves “Virgin”, but now have plans very similar to Bell and Solo since Bell took over. There’s still a lot you can do, like tell Virgin of competitors’ offers or threaten to leave. Hope that helps! :-)

  3. Justin, go into a store…
I was able to get one of the new nationwide plans without a problem… I had the old $25 with unlimited texting, asked them to switch it to the new $25 nationwide, and the girl at the booth did it with out a problem.

  5. If it is just for city fido it is garbage since they’ve had the $10 addon for CF since they reintroduced the unlimited CF plans.

City Fido is still zoned which means it is still only meant to take advantage of retarded customers. City Koodo is the same price but is not zoned, which means you don’t get hit with insane out of zone fees in addition to long distance fees (without ld addon).

  6. Also, where koodo and others include this unlimited Canadian long distance for free, Fido charges $20 and then has the nerve to ‘discount’ it to $10. So, anyone interested in this is asking to pay more for Fido plans and at the same time get a crappier 3G network than koodo. Anyone thinking this is a good deal needs to call me. I have a bridge to sell you.

    • The only difference is that Fido allows customers to choose between two networks: HSPA+ or GSM. There is also the option to choose different types of devices, like HSPA+(Big 3)/GSM, HSPA+(AWS)/GSM, or just GSM devices. With Koodo, only HSPA+(Big 3)/GSM devices will work. On Apple and NewEgg, this is called “AT&T 3G.” Low service price, smaller handset selection.

But having said all that, it doesn’t excuse Fido charging so much. They charge a lot for almost all their devices, whether they have HSPA+(Big 3)/GSM or just GSM. If that’s not enough, Fido (and its parent Rogers) charge a lot for service, plus Rogers has the GRRF. Think Fido doesn’t have it? Oh, they just “tuck it in” the price for data-only plans. That dog may look friendly, but be careful. It bites.

  7. Rogers has EDGE to fall back on while Telus/koodo don’t. Sort of like selling a car with foot pedals as a fallback got when the engine dies. Maybe a reliable engine and 3G network would be better.

    • Unfortunately, Rogers sees their EDGE network as a reason why their HSPA network doesn’t need to work properly. If you call them with a 3G issue, they will tell you to use EDGE rather than fix the actual problem because EDGE almost always works better.

  8. If you go to Fido’s website you’ll see that it’s not just for City Fido customers. There’s a $10 feature for standard Fido plans and another $10 feature for those on City Fido. There’s an add on for either plan.

  9. When I tried to negotiate cheaper long distance with Fido I was told Fido is not going to match prices with the competitors. I wonder how many people like me left for the competitors. Seems Fido is always following the competition. Good job of being innovative Fido.

    • how can you call this “innovative” when Americans eliminated long distance charge like 10 years ago. It’s ridiculous cell phone companies here still charge long distance fees.

    • @mukrenol that does not work all the time. I actually got a rude customer service rep who basically told me to go the competitor. BTW I was not arguing or raising my voice with the rep either. The only time he was polite was to tell me not to cancel my phone service before switching to another company. I called a week later and I was offered was $15 add on for unlimited LD. I have a cheaper bill with Koodo that has unlimited LD and a data add-on. I did not have the data add-on with Fido.

  13. @Andrew
what i did was do research on the competitors first
then said, i really want to stay with fido but the competitors are so tempting…

hint you want to stay with fido but you have no other choices… blah blah blah

that will soften up a bit
if they still rudely tell you to switch over
just switch… not worth it to stay eh? =]

  14. I love how the uneducated quickly say go to Koodo. Koodo has the worst customer service (as in none because they will charge you up to $35 just to talk to them). And the Tab scam, please let me take 5 years to pay off my crappy LG phone with battery issues with my $25 plan with 50 text messages. Yeah thats a deal. Just so the Koodo fan boys know, Koodo was the only company that took the hardest hit in customers leaving them to join the wind/mobli/pm newbies. Plus when their servers got hacked and all the serial numbers for customers phone were stolen, how many of you had mysterious charges on your bill. NO COMPANY IS PERFECT, but do you homework before thinking that the only company that has lost 2% market share in a year is the greatest.

  15. Yeah Koodo have great plans. But there is more to a wireless company than plans. Customer service is a very important consideration. Something like 45% of wireless complaints to the CCTS are billing errors. Koodo’s self-serve is often down I noticed and I hear their customer service is atrocious. God forbid you have a big billing error with Koodo and need it resolved.

As for the Tab, yeah it takes you forever to pay off the phone in full unless you have an expensive plan. But on the flip side, the early cancellation fee (ECF) is based entirely on device subsidy (The Tab). Whereas with Bell and Rogers, the ECF is the greater of $100 or $20/remaining month for a maximum of $400. That’s an insane amount for a “crappy LG”.

  16. I feel very sorry for Fido customers. Crappy selection of phones, crappy plans and worst of all is their customer service. I dont care how many of you on these boards swear by them, they are the worst carrier to be with besides Robbers. Just today alone, we had about 4-5 Fido customers come in and try to activate/renew and we couldnt because the Fido systems have been down for days and because they wont budge for early renewals of any kind.

Fido’s competitors have GIVEN you all canada-wide plans. Why would ANY of you think about taking a Fido phone or plan? Virgin and Koodo beat them hands down and offer no-contract plans.

I am so done with Rogers/Fido and im only SELLING them. I have an enormous sense of regret everytime i renew a fido/rogers customer because i know i am dooming them to 2-3 years of sub par service, already outdated phones and overall garbage value.

Sorry for the rant, but i feel like you should all know what its like dealing with these companies on a representative level before you try dealing with them on a consumer level.

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

  18. Mukrenol you are not telling me anything I didn’t know already. For those saying going to Koodo was an uneducated decision I guess saving money on my bill is a stupid decision. I am not a koodo fanboy and if I get fed up with them I can always leave since I am not in a 3 year contract. Furthermore I have heard complaints about all customer service. People we are never going to win with these companies.

  19. Fido rocks! They have the best customer service. I always call them for problems and they fix everything over the phone.

Employees are sorta i****s sometimes. The customer service people are the best cause they know everything, or know how to direct you to someone that is in the area you are asking for.

Of course, Fido is also good cause you can haggle with them. My plan is so cheap right now I’m reluctant to buy a new phone cause I know I’ll be stuck with a 50+ plan again.

  20. First, the $10 Canada wide add on is available to all plans as of Friday Nov.4, before that it was just for CityFido.
2nd, I been using fido for a year and they are the best I seen, after trying Bell, Rogers, Wind, Solo and Telus.
3rd, I got unlimited talk and text from anywhere in Canada to anywhere in Canada and to the US plus CID for only $50 a month, not even wind can offer that.

  21. @Andy: you have a retentions plan from Fido that Fido no longer allows, so not even Fido can offer that. And what you plan actual allows for $50 is unlimited talk and text to any Canadian or US number from anywhere on the Rogers/Fido network.

For $35 Wind has the same, except it also includes unlimited MMS, voicemail and mobile data. Good anywhere on the Wind network, just like you plan is good anywhere on the Rogers network, though Rogers network is much, much obviously bigger for now. If you travel outside of you home city much, your plan is good. If you don’t, then you are paying far too much.

Also, I have the same $50 Can/US Fido retentions plan you have, but with credits the voice plan costs be $23, so you are really over paying.

  22. Andy: the bridge I have is in beautiful Newfoundland. It was never actually finished so it won’t actually take you anywhere. But it overlooks a local hotel/bar where the locals hangout and drink homemade screech. On a good night in the winter you can see half a dozen of them outside writing their names in the snow? Interested? You can get the $10 Fido addon if you need to call home.

PS. The locals hardly ever abuse outsiders, so don’t be afraid of that. As a Fido customer you may already be used to being bent over, but maybe bring some lube.

  23. Next stop, $0.00. I’m with an earlier commenter, Canada needs to catch up with the USA and simply eliminate LD all together. This is just one step closer.

I got my son a Public Mobile phone 3 weeks ago since Fido refused to offer anything remotely comparable – I would have just added a third line to our account instead..

For $17 it’s unlimited minutes AND unlimited long distance.

The incumbents hands are being forced, but they’re still holding onto the long distance cash cow by a few fingernails.

  24. What is it with people comparing Fido to Rogers?
Fido IS Rogers! It doesn’t matter if the plans or phones are different.
It’s all meant to mislead the uneducated. Better to get some money out of those who won’t pay for a ”premium” service like Rogers than get nothing when they go elsewhere.
    Had to rant. Carry on.

  25. Every company always copies koodo. No contract, no fees, no long distance in Canada….. Still koodo wins. I can spend 20 dollars a month and actually BE anywhere in Canada. No one can offer me that, and no one will give me a smart phone with that either.
