The showdown season is upon us. Soon, the winter crop of smartphones will hit the market with a frantic gust of hyped specs and claims of superiority. But we’re a pretty equitable bunch, and where the companies and carriers see competition, we see harmony. Or, rather, we see opportunity to pit the best devices against one another in fierce combat!
The HTC Raider and Amaze are being released across all three major carriers — the former to Rogers and Bell, the latter to Telus — and both have their perks. Raider claims a bigger 4.5″ screen and LTE speeds of up to 75Mbps, while the Amaze boasts a fantastic camera, faster processor and brighter display. While there is no clear winner, we have enjoyed testing both so far… until we get our full reviews out the door, here’s some photos and a comparison video to tide you over.

I thought the Raider was an ugly phone to begin with, but next to the Amaze it looks like Chunk from The Goonies.

HTC builds the best phones, hands down – both are great devices

I have to admit, HTC does make some nice phones. However, the HTC Amaze looks absolutly horrible and bulky. The revolutionary “back” looks square and boxy and the front of the screen with the silver bezel makes it look like a shitty blackberry. The Raider is the clear winner here.

I didnt know the Amaze was coming to rogers? Or do they mean each of the big 3 will have one of the two?

I would love to have detailed breakdown of photo quality between the Amaze4G and the GN. It’s amazing at how fast that Amaze4G took pictures and I’m a little saddened to think that it will be better then the GN

I’m finding it very hard to pick a winner as far as design….both are really nice, but in different ways.

the raider does looks like htcs version of the galaxy 2 big screen, all black and better looking but uncreative. the amaze is alot better, its original but also smaller. it doesnt steal the same design from pretty much every andriod device. htc also says the amaze has the best camera on a smartphone, they dont say that about the raider. the raider is probaly alot faster when its on lte but lte isnt availible in my area and i never have given a crap about speed tests.

Does the HTC Amaze have a removable battery? Wondering why it’s shown against Raider with it’s back cover off.

Yes both phones had removal batteries. I do not know why they never took the back off the Raider.
The Raider is amazing. i am using it & i get around 16hours of battery life on it. ( using power saver & also got juice defender ultimate to turn off my wifi / network connects while my phone is on stand by.
I love the look of the Raider as well. Yes its a bit heavy but what do you think? The LTE chip is not small. Also no the Raider nor does the amaze have gorilla glass. The screen on the Raider looks amazing same with the Amaze. Both great phones but i would take the Raider anytime.

@Whitney Young – that IS the amaze, not the raider.

Why do they even advertise UPTO 75MBps when they don’t even come close to that download speed?

It’s similar to telling people that they are getting a “free” phone on a 3-year contract. Big numbers and a words like FREE make simpletons salivate and part with their money quicker.

Dalex — I couldn’t agree more! Both of those are ugly and the Raider is a freakin’ TANKARD! So awful. Screen is pretty if you like holding a brick all day.
Both phones getting passed up for the awesome GS2 for me as well

Hey guys do both of these have gorilla glass? I am pretty sure they have to since almost every HTC phone before does and I dont think HTC would downsize. The phone isnt out in the US yet so its not on Cornings website. I was just wondering if anyone had a clue?

I bought an HTC Raider from Rogers (York Mills/Leslie) last week and it stopped connecting to the Internet yesterday. I have already done few factory resets and setting the correct APN settings, but it wouldn’t work still (already using an LTE SIM; no blocks on my account). So the rep brought out a new unit and it exhibited the same issue…
I ended up picking up another Raider from another location and the device worked right out of the box!

you should compare the amaze with the sensation….. not the raider.

well look at it this way LTE service is so spotty in canada right now the telus hsdpa+ network is much more solid and available so if you want fastish speeds more place or rely fast in a few places your pick

Every LTE Device can connect to HSPA + or 3G. You go into settings > wireless networks > Mobile networks > Network mode. There you can pick if you want it as GSM only, HSPA only, GSM & HSPA only & GSM / HSPA & LTE ONLY. You can pick GSM & HSPA & you get 4G networks.

Raider works as dual cell device upto 42mbps outside LTE coverage if you are on bell.
Both devices are great and you should see similar performance with Raider being a bit faster in LTE areas due to higher speeds and lower latency.
I am not sure where the egg heads on this forum get their info about qualcom GPU and stuff. Pls dont tell me you google up a whole bunch of biased articles ? You can easily find two contradicting reports showing Mali 400 being ahead of Adreno 220 and the other way around.

Can you provide a link to these articles that show the Adreno being in the same stratosphere as the Mali GPU?

I prefer the Raider, bcuz of the bigger screen. HTC does make some good phones, but Samsung makes the best phones

Not mad, just pointing out the limitations in these devices. I used to really like HTC, you know? Back when they didn’t release a new flagship every week and had quality devices that warrented them using the monicker “quietly brilliant”.
They should probably go with “Loudly Ordinary” from now on to be more accurate.
If they could concentrate on making one flagship with a non bloated version of Sense running ICS and incorporate a thin design housing the next generation Qualcomm Krait chip, they would redeem themselves.

Hey Guys,
So I went into a local Rogers Wireless in Manitoba here, and the actually had the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Raider. I was going to purchase it right there but my eligibility was still costly – would of been 270 for the HU fee then 200.00 phone and 35..yeah, so at 564? No.. gonna wait.
But the fellow there let me tinker with the SII and the Raider and I have to say having owned a Captivate before I was thoroughly impressed with the HTC’s weight, speed, camera – typing.
I think time comes when HU I am going to the HTC for something different.

Completely agree with Dalex. Don’t know what htc is doing. They are making their devices thicker and thicker!! Take a look a the new htc Rezound, 13.65mm thick!! Really!?
While Sense UI does provide some nice features, it’s totally bloated. That 360 spinning 3D desktops is a perfect example; it’s so annoying and completely useless and resource hogging, and there is no way to turn it off!!!! what the heck HTC!! I used to love HTC as well, but not any more…..

Picked up the Amaze on Friday and love it! Battery life is amazing as well as build quality. Given that the HTC phones are getting thinker while batteries are getting larger the size isn’t a bad trade off.

Right now my Amaze is still over 50% battery after 14 hours of light use, so I have no complaint!

Been using the Raider for a month now in and around downtown Toronto. The fastest speed I’ve gotten on LTE is 30 Mbps. I love the phone and htc. It’s my third HTC Android. The Samsung phones look too much like that cellular fashion accessory sold by that fruity company.
