Rogers, Fido, Bell, TELUS and Virgin all started taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 4S yesterday, the official launch date is on October 14th. MTS confirmed to us that “We can confirm that MTS will have the iPhone 4S”, but gave no indication of its availability.
Koodo Mobile – who we are hearing is having tremendous success with the iPhone 4 sales – has not come forward yet about the iPhone 4S. On the Apple Canada site it states they’ll release it, but confirmation is always a good thing. This internal screenshot shows it’ll be available for sale across Canada on the 14th. In addition, you can also expect Koodo to start selling the iPhone 4 8GB model too. No word on the 4S prices, probably $160 on 3-year and $500 on the Tab.
More soon!
(Thanks tipster!)
I have a hard time believing that the iPhone 4 is selling well for them. Their iPhone plans are horrible. The cheapest contract iPhone plan is $65, and is equivalent to Rogers $50 plan.

That is true, but it’s much more sensible to use the tab/pay outright and get a much cheaper, no-contract plan. I plan on buying a 4s possibly on the tab and using their $50/month 2GB data, unltd text, cid and voicemail as it’s the best value in that rate I could find that gives canada-wide service no contract.

Matt, You should do some research before commenting and making a good company look bad. I’m a Koodo Rep in Fredericton just to clear things up. I always suggest people NOT to get it on a contract and to buy the phone outright because then you can choose any plan you want which includes free long distance on all of the plans. You can also then get 2GB of data for $25 and be under $50 a month for you plan, hell you can even do the $15 basic plan and then add on data for a total of $40.

These 3 year contracts should be illegal like in many other countries. Most phones and their technology don’t last that long so you are perpetually stuck to your cell phone provider unless you pay them huge fees to break away. Legalized extortion, only in Canada.

Agreed. However, until, canadians demand with their wallets as well as thier words it’s not likely to happen. Who wants to organize the “Cancel My Three Year Contract” day? If (and it’s a big if) you could get even a tenth of canadians on three year terms to cancel their agreements it might make a dent. But getting that many canadians to pay more than lip service to anything? Not holding my breath.

As much as I’d like to support you, I don’t think cancelling a 3 year contract and paying hefty cancellation fees will do anything to the big 3 except make them richer. Writing to your local MP and bringing this issue to them is a more worthwhile effort.

Assuming the average cost of a three year term (smartphone or other wise) would be about $45-55/month, and the top they can charge you by law is $25/month for canceling, they stand to loose more than half their income from those cancels. They would take notice.
Not the only solution either. If people refused to upgrade their phones and ignored the latest phones they would be forced to find some way to get us to buy them or loose all the money invested in advertising and bringing them in.
The only point I’m making is that it is more than “about time” we caught up with the rest of the world on cell terms, and I for one would participate in a well planned out protest.

I have not sold even a singe Koodo iPhone 4 since it came out. Sure, there have been plenty of inquiries, but generally i flip them over to Virgin, Bell or Telus with a better plan and more options.
@Infiniti guy, if you push your legisators to adopt similar laws as Quebec has (Manitoba too, i think), you will only pay the balance remaining on a full price purchase, which is pro-rated over the term of your contract.
Really, the problem isnt the carriers, its the consumers who enable the carriers by not taking pro-active steps to protect themselves.

The bottom line is most people in canada really can’t afford to pay for a phone in full price that’s why 3 year contract still around, big 3 is not just a phone company any more they are simply a bank to feed most people in canada make most people feel rich then they think they are, which totally is stupid no wonder why canada is in recetion now

Really, if you can’t afford no get it. Put on a 3 year or tab it does not means its a gift and you still have to pay for it,buy it when you need it, most important buy it when you really can afford it

Talking with a koodo guy in a mall a few days back and he mentioned to me that koodo selling the iphone 4 actually increased sales of the nexus s cause ppl inquired about the iphone but wanted a cheaper alternative so they went for the android. I thought it was interesting to hear

the bottom line is companies should make phones that are affordable for all, not increase their profit margins and scr$w over labourers who work over time and commit suicide. yes google foxconn. nuff said.

Service and purchase of phones should be leagaly seperate. Carriers would still sell phones. You could switch providers any time. 36 months 20 bucks a month for the phone includes interest. 30 bucks a month for your phone. The problem is you dont get a discount if you own your own phone. I’m not too much for regualtion but at the consumer level some contracts for long term leases should have regulations of sort to protect consumer

I sell Koodo. Not to knock on the iPhone, it’s still a great phone, but it’s definitely not the best phone. Not even on the lineup that Koodo offers. Apple is just really good at marketing their products.
The majority of the iPhones I’ve sold went for either full price ($650) or went for the tab price ($500). It just makes more sense to pay up front as the customer does not have to sign a contract, nor are they stuck with either the $65 or $80 plan Koodo offers on contract.
I had a person buy two iPhones, two Otter Boxes, and two car chargers. They dropped $1,440 + taxes with no complaint. Obviously not everyone has that kind of money, but it definitely shows that the risk Koodo took with the iPhone has paid off.
I’m not the biggest Apple fan, although I appreciate their products. But for those who want a less expensive alternative, there’s the Samsung Nexus S. It’s actually either equivalent or greater than the iPhone in terms of specs in several ways. Plus it’s a couple hundred dollars cheaper.
