Let’s Talk iPhone Event – updating throughout the day

2:14 PM ET: Now we’re onto the Voice Assistant part. Remember when Apple bought Siri? It’s about to pay dividends. Semantic voice recognition: “I want to get some pizza near Yonge & Dundas.”

2:11 PM ET: For those not looking at the official link below, let’s sum it up:

iPhone 4S: same screen, 2x faster processor, 8MP camera w/ 1080p video capture, much improved camera sensor and lens. iOS 5. Anyone gonna bite?

2:05PM ET: Check out our continuing coverage of the iPhone 4S.

1:55PM ET: iPhone now. iPhone 4S. Retina Display, of course. 3.5mm screen, same body. A5 chip (same as iPad). 2x faster in regular day activities, 7x faster than iPhone 4 in games.

1:52PM ET: iPod Touch. Most popular media device, and gaming platform in the world. Getting updated to iOS 5, obviously. iMessage and Game Center updates.

$199 8GB, $299 16GB, $399 32GB. Now available in white. No internal updates, including screen, camera and processor.

1:49PM ET: New iPod Nano? Or just a software update? Multi-touch display, 16 new clock faces. Apparently people love using the Nano as a watch. Did Apple ever think this would happen?

7 new colours. 8GB for $129, and 16GB for $149.

1:45PM ET: iTunes Match. Scans your iTunes library and makes it available in iCloud. Not available in Canada, at least at launch.

1:42PM ET: Family and Friends. A new location-based app. Mix between Google Latitude and Foursquare. Mostly for sharing your location, at certain times of day, with as you guessed, Family and Friends. Interesting for groups of crowds. iPhone has always had some of the most accurate location stats of any platform. Down to the metre in some cases.

1:40PM ET: iCloud now. Getting closer to the hardware announcements, folks. Stay tuned.

PC-free syncing. Finally. iTunes in the Cloud. Download previously-purchased apps, which is already in place. Pages/document syncing across devices. This is pretty cool, but Google Docs has been doing this for years.

Photo Stream. Auto-upload photos taken from your phone to iCloud. Again, Android has been doing this for years, merely playing catch-up. But still, good features.

1:37PM ET: iOS5 being released to public Wednesday October 12th. iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1 and 2. iPod Touch 4th and 3rd gen.

1:35PM ET: Improvements to Mobile Safari, especially on iPad. Real tabs. Reader, which removes ads and junk from the page making for clean reading experience. That’s Apple’s MO: removing clutter to get to the content.

1:33PM ET: Talking about Game Center. 67 million users. Does anyone actually use it? I think it’s one of those features Apple doesn’t want to admit is underwhelming.

1:31PM ET: Scott Forstall talking iOS5. GM version probably being seeded to developers today, for release next week. Twitter integration, Notification improvements, camera access from the lockscreen.

1:29PM ET: New Cards app. You can design a card and Apple will mail it anywhere in the US for $2.99, $4.99 internationally. Will get push notifications when the person receives it. Will likely single-handedly keep the USPS in business.

1:24PM ET: Sorry about the slow site. Seems everyone wants a piece of the iPhone.

250 million iPads sold. Insane numbers. 250 million iPads sold. $3 billion paid to developers. Android, your move.

1:21pm ET: We’re not at the event, folks. Have to take photos from those who are, unfortunately. Maybe next year!

1:16pm ET: iPhone now. The iPhone 4 sold half of all total iPhones before it, 2G, 3G, 3GS included. Amazing last year for Apple. No wonder people can’t wait for the new models. Huge customer satisfaction numbers. See #2? HTC should be pretty proud of that.

1:13pm ET: Getting to the iPod. Who wants to bet that the iPod Classic will get nixed? Can’t believe it’s been ten years since the first mechanical-wheel iPod was released. Time flies…

1:11pm ET: OS X Lion has been installed 6 million times. Not iPhone-related, but wow! Mac market percentage has outgrown (arguably saturated) PC market by six times, for five years running.

1:05pm ET: Tim Cook is out! They’re hosting the event in the same room as the original iPod announcement in 2001. Quite historic.

1:00pm ET – We already brought you word of the iPhone 4S leaking on Apple Japan’s site. Same design as the iPhone 4, but the same antenna design as the Verizon version. Specs to come. October 14th release date (in Japan).
