Rogers and Fido giving customers the option to upgrade to the iPhone 4 at $99 on 3-year, $50 price drop

The iPhone 5 is rumoured to officially be unveiled on October 5th, something that Apple fans have been waiting and pining over for the last number of months. Carriers in Canada have slowly reduced the 3-year contract price, TELUS, Bell, Virgin and SaskTel have all cut their pricing of the iPhone 4 16GB to $99 or less. Now Rogers is jumping into the game, the above doc states they are offering their current customers the option to upgrade at a lower price of $99 3/yr, but you’ll have to meet the standard HUP requirements. The Sony Ericsson Xperia arc is another device Rogers is giving the early HUP option too. This is only on until September 30th. The countdown is on…

Update: Here’s what the breakdown will look like, if you decide to go for this”
- $149.99 for the iPhone 4 16GB
- $35 Administrative Fee for the HUP
- Plus, any early HUP fee – this depends on what phone and when your previous contract was signed (see details here)

Update #2: Fido is also offering the same discount on the iPhone 4. In addition, they have discounted the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro to $0. The $25 hardware upgrade will still be applied.

(Thanks tipster!)

  1. and you will have to wait until March of 2014 to be eligible for the next hardware upgrade. By that time iPhone 7 will be out. Way to go Robbers!

    • @Kenypowa: …and how is that any different than any other person who buys an Apple product? Buy it today, it’s replaced tomorrow, but you’re still stuck in a 3-Year contract (or with a maxed out tab). Let’s think back to the poor saps who bought an iPhone 3, then the 3GS came out. Or those who rushed to buy the 3GS right before the 4 came out. It’s the same thing over and over again.

  2. As opposed to wind, where you have to pay $495 plus taxes to get a nexus s. No contract but you just paid the same as cancellation fee of rogers.

    • @John: Err, you know you can do the same thing at (Rogers) Fido right? Buy the phone outright (Optimus 2x = $425) and go on a month-to-month plan that works outside of limited zones. You knew that right? Guess you didn’t…

  3. 1. “Must meet standard hardware upgrade program requirements”.

    2. “All existing Rogers HUP elegibility rules and policies will apply”

To me, that says if you’re not in the HUP window, you’re not eligible. Where does it say you can do it “early”? If I picked up a Galaxy two months ago, there’s no way Rogers is going to let me HUP to an iPhone 4 today.

All they’ve done is lower the HUP price of the iPhone 4 for those in their window; which is garbage anyway, since you can get one for $99 on a new contract anyway.

    • Sean you don’t understand how HUPs work – you already received a large discount on your Galaxy. So REPAY what discount you received and then you can HUP again.

      How hard is that?

    • I COMPLETELY understand how the HUP works. However, the story (before it was changed) said Rogers was allowing you to upgrade “early”, which clearly they aren’t.

There was an error in the original story which is what I was pointing out.

  4. ….wtf how is it Rogers fault if YOU decide to upgrade today, instead of waiting? If anything, I feel bad for people paying $99 for a year+ old phone. Also, this article fails to mention the $35 admin fee that’s included with all upgrades.

    • I’m not blaming Rogers at all. The story (before it was changed) clearly said Rogers was offering the HUP early, to which I pointed out their error as the screenshot says all the standard rules apply (meaning you have to be in your window).

I gladly paid $99 for my Bell iPhone 4 three weeks ago. There’s nothing wrong with it, it does what I want it to and it suits my needs. Not everyone needs to try to keep up with the Jones’.

  6. iPhone 4 could be 0 on a new plan and still not worth it IMO, not when it’s 1.5yrs old, ancient tech by phone standards.

  7. I always thought it was funny how Rogers blatantly rips you off, but makes it sound like they genuinely believe they are doing you this enormous favor.

Not that the other guys are any better, but Rogers has always been especially good at this…lol

  11. I did that John. Paid $500 for the Nexus S on Wind. Of course my $35 Alberta plan for everything is a little better than Robbers My10 at $65.

Lets see… save $30 a month (for way more) x 36 months = $1080.00 enough for a couple of more Nexus machines.

Life is good if you do the math eh? Maybe I roam for $5 a year.

  12. 3-yr locked contract is the worst, coupled with old-gen hardware on the heels of iPhone 5, makes this deal extremely cold.

On another note, I just checked my HUP status, I have approx $320 to go in order to be eligible for a free HUP, since I last used iton release day for the iPhone 4. Bah.

  13. I wont lie but this is a alright deal. To people that are bitching at rogers for doing this. Did not Telus & bell do the same exact thing? $99 for the 16gb Iphone 4 for a 3year contract + admin fee? Why only b***h about Rogers when Telus & Bell did the same exact promotion.

I would buy the iPhone 4 but since i already have it, its not worth it. I might get a iphone 5 IF it looks way different from the iPhone 4 or any of the iPhone.

BTW a lot of people do not care about spending money all the time for a new phone. They want w.e phone they want. They do not need to spend 600+ for a phone that will most likely look the same just a bit higher end processor. most of us are not tech savy & care so much about what phones have & can do. Some just need a phone to call, text, email & surf the web..

  14. Works out to almost a $17/year savings on the 3 year contract. Seems somewhat underwhelming when looked at it that way.

  17. Just talked to a Manager at a Rogers store… He seems to think that a pre-order for the iphone 5 will show up on Rogers website Sept 30th…

    • Yea & the sky is red… Managers At Rogers stores or Managers & sales person do not know nothing at all.. They get told what they need to know a week or 2 ahead of launch. Not a month before. Believe me i know people that work at Rogers plus store near me & they have not been told anything at all yet. Also i do not believe & really doubt that there will be a per-order for iPhone 5s at Rogers stores or over the phone.. Last time i remember asking (when the iPhone 4 was coming out) They never took pre -orders it was first come first serve policy. Also the Demand will be high for this phone. So they will not be able to keep all the phones for only the people that per-ordered them & have none or only 20 per store for people waiting outside for hours & or days.

  20. So many of you so ignorantly think that you make up the majority of cell phone users. Oh, how wrong you are… Although I would never take this deal because I don’t like the iPhone it’s still not bad. If half of you saw the demographics that but phones everyday you would realize that the mobilesyrup community accounts for so very little of the subscriber base as a whole. I never hear you guys complaining that iPhones are price fixed year round and almost barely have no promotions attached to it. Stop f*cking whining at every thread. There’s too many people here who still fail to understand that carriers are businesses, not social clubs lying awake at night just dying for your approval. They need a source of income, you know. Have you any idea how much an LTE launch costs? Pull your entitled heads’ out of your asses. If you don’t want a contract, don’t get one. If you don’t like Rogers, go to another carrier. If you think Wind is stupid, then stay away.

Do you think the 40 year old mother with two kids who doesn’t give a damn about something HAVING to be the latest and greatest would find this a great deal? Yes. Not like most of you pimply little kids who spend way too much time on the internet and think they’re entitled to everything for free…
