“Canada’s Top Employers for Young People” report has been released. In total there are 100 organizations that made the cut this year, only 3 from a wireless perspective: RIM, Rogers and TELUS. The list was compiled by interviewing the companies on such topics as their ability to attract people, tuition assistance, training, benefits and mentorship. The reasons why Rogers was chosen was because employees get in-house and online training, career planning and weekly professional development lectures. Meanwhile, TELUS employees have the luxury of dressing casually, leadership training and onsite fitness. Even though they’re going through a rough time and laying off workers, RIM was chosen because all employees receive a free Berry, plus they “enjoy a relaxing work environment with a casual dress code, subsidized onsite massage services, and “ice cream Fridays”.

That’s because all young people like a good RIM job!

I’m sure Googlers enjoyed “a relaxing work environment with a casual dress code, subsidized onsite massage services, and “ice cream Fridays” without worrying being laid off due to incompetent management.

Sounds good and all, but wasn’t the open letter to RIM, that was posted awhile ago, complaining about how tense the workplace is and how everybody’s afraid to say anything in fear of getting fired/demoted? Lol. Not hating on RIM, just pointing it out.

Of course Rogers employs lots of young people – call centers and their stores are filled with them. Hopefully non-skilled jobs weren’t counted, but the presence of McDonalds on the list pretty much tells you they do. It’s a marketing ploy and depends on submissions by the companies themselves. Each company must apply. I’m sure there are many great companies that didn’t even apply.

You would be surprised to find out what some Customer Service reps make at the big 3. A friend of mine who works for Rogers cleared 45k last year with his full-time salary and sales commissions! Business Group CSR’s make almost $20.00 per hour. Most CSR’s who work in the Sales Dept make more money then their managers.
So I’m not sure where this minimum wage talk comes from…

Notice how Bell isn’t mentioned? That’s because Bell is one of the worst companies in the world to work for. They’ve ruined the companies they purchased (The Source, Virgin), and alienated all the employees there, to the point where anyone who had worked there and gained experience, and had valuable skills, got fed up and left. I’ve seen this happen to dozens of people since I left that organization. Customer service has plummeted due to everyone being unhappy, and any money Bell can wrench from your paycheck, they will.
